Mohs surgery for Microcystic Adnexal Carcinoma (MAC)

Hello!

I am new to this forum. Here’s what’s happening with me so far:

I went to see a dermatologist back in  August 2022 with a mole on my leg ( turned out to be ok) almost as an afterthought, I asked her to look at something under my right eye. It was something I had noticed was growing but I had had it checked in 2018 and been told it was nothing to worry about at all. The dermatologist said it could be a BCC and ordered a biopsy. I waited a couple of months for the biopsy to be done then another 6 weeks for results which came back as possibly MAC ( it is difficult to diagnose). I was told it would be removed by simple excision and I would have to wait another 6-8 weeks for results which I was not happy about as I had done a bit of research myself, and I had seen that Mohs is the gold standard for this type of skin cancer. I turned up for my excision appointment and managed to persuade the consultant to refer me for Mohs instead!

I am having my Mohs surgery next week and I am getting nervous as the day approaches. I think my anxiety is coming from not knowing how much tissue they will take away and whether it will be a small area with a few stitches or a large area that will need reconstruction. I won’t know until the day so I guess no one can help me with that!

I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has had MAC ( which is quite rare) I searched for it on here but the only members who came up were from several years ago and it looks like they are no longer part of this online community.

Or, if you have had Mohs in a similar place to mine ( upper right cheek under the eye), I’d love to know how you got on with healing after your surgery.

thanks for reading if you got this far and I sincerely hope you are all recovering well.

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I don't have any experience with Mohs surgery but I noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. Like you, I've done a search for previous posts which mention microcystic adnexal carcinoma and found these. Although some are a few years old, unless the username says 'FormerMember' if you reply to them they should still be receiving notifications from Macmillan in the same way as you'll get a notification that I have responded to you.

There are lots of people in the group who have had Mohs surgery and this link will take you to the posts, with the most recent at the top. Unfortunately, I can't refine the list further to a specific area on the face but you could have a look through some of them to see if any were in roughly the same area as you will be having surgery.

Wishing you all the best for next week and do come back and let us know how you get on.

  • Thank you for the reply. I will take a look. Thank you for the well wishes and I will let you know how I get on. My surgery is on

Wednesday. I’m not afraid to say I am a bit anxious about it but I know I am in good hands.

  • All the best for Wednesday

From my experience dealing with cancer, the nurses and doctors have all been really caring and supportive people.
