My husband has had CLL for just over 2 years and is still on watch and wait. Last Nov he was diagnosed with SCC on his scalp. It was removed, returned and larger removal done. Deromotolgy kept saying very low risk and easy to remove etc.
Within weeks new aggressive bumps came up around the wound and really quickly spread. He has had urgent surgery to remove the tumour plus salivary gland and lymph nodes in his neck- both found to have cancerous cells. He is due to go back for reconstruction surgery on Thursday. Surgeon has decided to remove 8cm square of his skull bone at same time as worried that cancer could have got into the bone.
He is happy to have the surgery as it gives him best chance but I am scared it will just keep coming back until it kills him.
Does anyone have any advice?
That sounds really scary and it's no wonder you are worrying about it coming back. I don't know what CLL is and I had a basal cell carcinoma on my scalp so I don't have experience of squamous cell. However, I had Mohs surgery done which is where they test the bits they cut out on the day and keep cutting more out until they have got it all out by the end of the day. It means not having to wait for biopsy and more surgery later. However I don't know if this is relevant to your husband's situation. It might be worth raising it to see if it's a possibility as it sounds really important to make sure all the cancer cells are out asap.
Hi ROS85 and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.
I don't have any experience with SCC on the scalp but I noticed that you hadn't had any replies from anyone who has had this yet.
I did a search for previous posts in the group which mention SCC on the scalp and found these for you to have a look through. They might not exactly fit your husband's scenario but I hope they'll help. You could reply to any of the posters if you want to ask them any questions and you think they might be able to help you further.
Do come back and let us know how your husband gets on with his surgery.
