I recently had a consultation for BCC on the nose and the doctor gave me a leaflet with information about taking vitamin B3 to help prevent occurrence of basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma. I've posted a link below to an article which covers the research this advice was based on and I've deliberately chosen one that takes a skeptical angle on the research. This is so people can be aware the research exists but also the shortcomings (i.e. it involved mostly older people that due to their age are more susceptible to skin cancers anyway. Taking B3 might have less of an impact if you're younger).

Also it indicates you ought to take the "flush-free" form of B3 called nicotinamide (slow release) rather than regular B3 niacin (which is often used to treat cholesterol but can cause skin flushes to occur). I thought the link might be of interest and lead us to do further research. Obviously the best advice for prevention is still stay out of the sun if you can, cover up / apply a good sunblock when you do go out etc.

  • Hi

Thanks for the link to the information about taking B3. Having been diagnosed with melanoma 5 years ago I certainly agree with the staying in the shade and covering up with clothing approach to staying safe in the sun.

It's interesting that your consultant gave you a leaflet about B3 and I'd be interested to know if he recommended that you took it.

Here is a link to the actual study for those who’d like a bit of further reading. I’ve taken the view that it won’t do any harm so have been taking nicotinamide supplements since my SCC diagnosis in July 2020.

  • Every little bit helps when you have pale skin that pops up BCC and SCC like flowers in springtime. My doctors lick their surgical chops when I come for biopsies.  This may help cut down the number of surgeries every year, thanks!

  • One thing not mentioned are side effects (positive and adverse) and cautions. I'll research that a little more. I wonder if there are synergistic combos of supplements that could provide additional benefit from B3 supplements.

  • Interesting. Will follow up on this. My wife wants to boost my immune system. This may be a good weapon against the invading army of BCC and SCC, maybe to fight my Merkel Cell Carcinoma, too.  My kids bought me long sleeve surf shirts to wear when I go to the beach and I wear them almost all day every day. I may look a little silly, but I walk around under an umbrella on sunny days.
