Hi  OK, I saw a specialist 3 yrs ago with what I believed was skin cancer. She said it was nothing, it was milk spots and normal.

She was dismissive and her attitude was one of, 'you're wasting my time!'

I said to her, 'so it's not skin cancer?' She flippantly said she couldn't say that! And ended the apmt.

I continued back and forth to my gp as I was certain it was a BCC. My Dr clearly went off this specialist notes and told me each time it wasn't cancer.

21 daysdays ago I saw a different GP as mine was off. I now didn't just have a lump outside, but now there is a tumour inside as well. Hence my visit to my GP. As soon as he saw it, he knew. He agreed with me it was cancer. He sent me to a specialist.

3 days later I saw a specialist, he confirmed it was a BCC tumour.

Last week I saw another specialist who again confirmed it a BCC. It has developed this lump inside about 3 months ago. But being ill stopped me hoping.

Now I need a biopsy. She wants to know how deep its gone! If it was on my back she'd just remove it, but cos its on my face she can't.

I didn't know it could grow deep, will the 3 year delay cause an issue? They're both concerned and me having a scar, I said I don't care, I just want it gone!

e've  no idea of waiting times for a biopsy?

Also a year later I saw the same specialist over a scaly pink / reddish leison on my shin, this is also a BCC, and I was told it nothing!

So, on my face misdiagnosed by 3 years

On my leg misdiagnosed 2 years

I've now noticed another very small one on the other side of my face which I'll have checked at the biopsy apmt. But the one on my face is growing up towards my eye.

I wanted to ask anan opinion on the delay and complications that may occur?

I have to say, I'm by no means a worrier, but I can't get this out of my head! Just want it gone.

Oh, last weeks specialist told me that they'll have to monitor me very carefully because I have a  condition called,

Gardners Syndrome. Basically my body grows tumours, usually from the neck up.

I've had 2 brain tumours, 2 mouth tumours, a tumour on top of my head and a tumour on my chin.none of them cancer. They turn cancerous of not removed, but I didn't know they could grow cancer from the start!

If this specialist said that  why didn't the other one do a biopsy 3 years ago if I'm an 'at risk patient'

I can't get it out of my head and I'm really worried. I literally can't sleep and can hardly eat... I'm going round the bend.

Can anyone relate to this or can give me feedback please?

Many thanks

Cat

    Dear Cat

Im really sorry to hear what you’re going through. My story is different to yours but it did involve lots of worrying so I can relate to that. Like you, I was misdiagnosed for a year but I found it better focusing my energy on dealing with the issue rather than the negativity regarding the consultants who missed the pre cancerous mole on my face. I also found it helped by keeping busy.

There are lots of lovely people on here who can support you and give you more relevant advice I’m sure.

    Good luck.

Hi Rebecca, thanks for your reply.

Yeah, I get what you're saying about the  negativity, andand I've never in my life had any negativity whatsoever, so I'm upset overover that

With me  its, get in, get it out, get home, get well.

That's how I deal with stuff, i just don't seem to be able to with this. Not bothered about a scar, no matter how good or bad it is, justjust how deep is gone.

Again, thank you for your reply, I appreciate it.

  • Hi Cat and a very warm welcome to the online community

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently been diagnosed with a couple of BCCs after previously being told that they were nothing to worry about. Unfortunately, as I know, it can sometimes be very difficult for any type of skin cancer to be diagnosed as they don't always conform to what they should look like.

However, even if they were missed a few years ago BCCs are very slow growing and, if you take a look at this information from the British Association of Dermatologists, rarely spread to other parts of the body and so are almost never a danger to life.

Because BCCs grow slowly it could be a few weeks before you get an appointment for the biopsy. However, as you say you have a syndrome that causes your body to grow tumours you may be seen more quickly. The best person to ask would be your skin cancer nurse specialist (SCNS), if you've been assigned one, or phone your consultant's secretary and she should be able to give you an idea of the timescales involved.

For most people the only treatment they'll need is the removal of the BCC and you don't normally have to have check-ups afterwards. However, again in your case this may be different so have a chat to your SCNS or consultant to find out if you'll need to be monitored.

I hope your appointment comes through quickly

  • Hi

I was wondering if you had a date yet for your biopsy?

I hope you're well and enjoying the Bank Holiday.
