i’m having a basal cell cancer removed from my scalp next week. Unfortunately it is an excision as MOHS is not offered here in Newfoundland. I know the scalp can bleed a lot and I’m concerned. Wondering if anyone else has a scalp lesion excision and what it was like for them? Thank you so so much for your help.
Hi and welcome back
I've searched in this group to try and find others who have had a BCC removed from their scalp and I'm tagging and into my reply to you as they have had this surgery recently You may have read their posts when you were last on here but if not hopefully they can answer your questions.
As Macmillan is based in the UK the answers you get will be based on surgical experiences that relate to treatment here which may not be the same as you get in Canada.
I hope the operation goes well and please pop back and let us know how you get on.
x
Thank you so much for your reply. You’re so kind and I really appreciate it. I certainly will let you know how it goes.
Hi and thank you for your kind words, they're much appreciated x
Hi ,
I had scalp surgery 7wks ago, not BCC but the same excision treatment.
When I came round after surgery I had a drain from my incision wound. My scalp was neatly bandaged up & I had what looked like a Christmas bauble (?!) by my ear to collect any blood.
I was kept in overnight and the bandages & drain were removed during the next morning. There was no issue with it & very little blood. They just need to let it drain out of your wound site & not underneath it!
It was painful & uncomfortable afterwards but manageable. Finding a comfortable sleeping position was tricky to start with. I went with propping myself up with extra pillows.
Good luck with your surgery.
Thank you for your reply. Mine is being removed in daysurgery under a local. He said he’d remove it and staple the area to close. Your experience sounds much more extensive than what he told me mine would involve. I guess I’ll have to wait and see. I hope though I can get it removed as he described but who knows how it’ll go. Wishing you the very best.
My first removal was day surgery & it was very straightforward. I was soon back to work.
Staples are used as a quick method of closure. I joked that I was Frankensteins’ monster & my friend said I had metal fatigue
Your medical team will have told you exactly what they intend to do & that’s what you should expect. Please don’t worry that it will be anything else. They know what they’re doing.
Best wishes
Hi I've had 2 operations on my scalp. 1st operation was a removal of a SCC on top of scalp. This was a local operation lasting approx 45mins. I was very nervous but it's not as bad as I thought. Local anesthetics in head about 6 injections. Not too painful. The lump removed and skin stitched either side like the shape of your eye and dressed The critical time is to take painkillers after the operation. This will help in keeping the pain to a minimum after the anesthetics wear off. Make sure you sleep in an upright position for at least a week. Keep taking painkillers for at least a week. I've had a skin graft on the top of my scalp also. If anyone wants to know anything please post
Thanks Everyone.
Hi folks. I had my excision of scalp basal cell today. All went well. I have 6 staples. It was so much easier than I had anticipated. Thank you all for your support & kindness.
Hi ,
i’m glad to hear it went well. Onwards & upwards from here.
Best wishes for your recovery.
Glad it went well .
