Hi, newbie here..........totally shocked to be told I have Bowen's as I have never sunbathed in my entire life (I'm 61)....I've been on 1 beach holiday ever back in 1986 and sat in the shade the whole week. However I am very fair skinned, don't tan and have blue eyes....all markers I'm told. Just collected the dreaded Efudix cream and am about to start and am petrified, partly because I feel I've had no support re: what reaction to expect....nothing by my GP or the Pharmacist other than you may get an inflammatory reaction. I've done my own research fortunately but am just wondering how the heck I will know when to stop using it.....especially around the warnings not to put the cream on open wounds/sores etc....but then you see the pics of nasty wounds happening to others. I've got the Efudix 2 x daily for a month and then a steroid type cream to switch to when I stop the Efudix....not sure if I can use the 2nd cream before if I have a significant reaction? How long before I see any reaction? Fortunately it's not a very large area...but it's lower leg which can be tricky apparently.....sorry....so many questions!!
Hi Mistydog. Think some people do take longer to have a reaction. Our plastic surgeon did say the better the reaction means the cream is doing its job. We are still having major problems getting the Efudix. 12 pharmacies tried and not one has it. Hubby has left a message with the supply company to call him and our Nuffield hospital has put an order in, but not sure yet they can get it. Apparently it is like gold dust, so take care of your precious tube x
Hi Harlyn..... Will your husbands consultant prescribe a different cream or are they all in short supply?
Hi Puckettyboo Just in limbo at the moment as Secretary and Consultant on holiday. Nuffield will know by tomorrow whether they can get it, if not we have to ring Consultants department and let them know.
Shocking isn't it? When you think that these creams prevent scc forming?
I know it is very worrying. Apparenty there are others, but not as efficient. Luckily the lesions are very small (at the moment) , so hoping we can find some soon xx
Just to keep you all updated. Hubby rang the manufacturers of Efudix this morning and they have just called him back. Pharmacies should have supplies of Efudix cream by the end of the week. Didnt say why there had been problems, but seems to be sorted now. Good uck everyone with your journey, please keep in touch with progress xx
Everyone, Thank you for sharing your stories. My family member is waiting to get his efudex because of several spots on his face and below his ear. Just like Mistydog4 and others, the dermatologist has given no guidance. I am wondering should he wear gloves when using efudex? Also, is he ok washing his face with liquid soap or just water. Any suggestions is appreciated.
Hi Oneday-pray We have managed to get some Efudix now, it is slowly coming back into stock at pharmacies. Our Consultant told us to apply is sparingly on a cotton bud being careful not to get it on anywhere other than the part that needs treatment. Think you can wash as normal after. Hubby has to apply it twice a day for 3 weeks. He starts it when we get back from holiday as didnt think it was a good idea mixing it with sun cream, to which Consultant agreed. I will keep you posted how it goes and good luck.x
