Hi everyone, I hope it's ok for me to post here? My mum, 83, who I look after has had various SCCs removed over the last 4 months, arm, stomach, leg. Biopsies were taken from her upper lip as there is a suspicious area there too. Biopsies came back grade 3 poorly defined tumour on the lip. The doctor wanted to operate within a week ( cancer was confirmed early July) but mum has refused surgery as it will leave her with virtually no mouth, struggling to eat and speak. Oncology appointment to discuss radiotherapy is not until end of September. Mum had a CT scan with contrast yesterday. In the meantime another 2 SCC have rapidly appeared on her chest which her GP has said looks cancerous.we have also been called for an appointment next week with dermatology after something called a MDT meeting was held and they need to discuss the SCC that was removed from her leg. Mum has said she can't make any decisions and wants me to decide on treatment etc for her, she is obviously scared. I'm not really sure what my questions are but I'm just really feeling the pressure and looking for any help/advice from anyone with similar experiences, I really don't want to turn to Dr Google but end of September is a long time away. Sam
Hi rubydoobs and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.
I'm sorry to read that your mum has had to have lots of procedures to remove SCCs and it sounds like an incredibly hard time for you.
MDT is short for multidisciplinary team and is a meeting of all types of medical specialists who will have discussed your mum's results and decided on the best course of treatment. You will be able to discuss the findings in place of your mum as long as she has given her permission to her medical team.
It would be great if you could pop something about your mum's diagnosis and treatment so far into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
Do come back and let us know how you get on at the appointment next week.
