Had bcc confirmed don’t understand what happens next Iv got apt with plastic surgery dept 26: Jan but Iv found another on my nose forming excacly same as one on lower eyelid can I mention this to the surgeon?

  • Hi Roxy I am not sure. When I saw dermatologist, he referred me to plastic surgeon, who gave me a few options one of which was MOHS surgery and he would come in at the end for the reconstruction. When he explained it I said No and went ahead and had normal skin flap and skin graft surgery with him doing everything.   Not many hsopitals offer MOHS so you are lucky to be offered it.  Keep in touch and good luck xx

  • So is this a good thing Mohs surgery?

  • Hi

    Yes it's all normal.

My consultant arranged for me to meet the MOHS surgeon to discuss options but it was decided I didn't need it.

If the surgeon feels that's what you need then they'll recommend it.

My experience is that the surgeons discuss things with each other and you as the patient and then come up with the treatment plan.

Some just do the excision and another closes up and some do it all in one go.

    It seems quite variable

  • Hi again Roxy. Yes MOHS surgery is a good thing, lots of people would like it, but it isn't offered at many hospitals.  They take small areas away and test to make sure the surrounding skin is cancer free whilst you wait, so at least you know that the srroundinbg area and margins are free of cancer cells before they either graft or reconstruct.  My hubby asked my Consultant what the percentage was for getting it all without MOHS and he said 96% so I opted for this, as I would have had to go to Nottingham for MOHS and I had such trust in the surgeon I was seeing.  Fortunately my margins were clear with what he did.  Good luck and ask anything you like and we will try and reassure and help you. Where do you live Roxy. I live in Derbyshire so would have had to go to Nottingham xx

  • Hi I’m in Liverpool so seeing plastic surgery at St Helens hospital as that specializes in burns plastic surgery ect I’m not even sure x

  • Hi

When you see the surgeon he or she will explain the MOHS procedure and why they're recommending it.

It does take longer while they wait for results which you need to be prepared for but they'll explain all that.

I had what is called slow mohs which is where they did a normal excision and didn't close it up until the lab results were back in two weeks.

I could have had standard MOHS but both surgeons didn't feel it was necessary so that's what I opted for.

They'll talk you through it all so be prepared with any questions you may have

  • Thanks I’m going to write them down so I don’t forget Iv decided to go away begin of feb as Iv not been able to have a holiday due to my neurological condition and not going to feel comfortable going after the surgery so we have decided to change all appointments to after we get back end feb and just deal with everything then.
