Hi All,

I have recently been diagnosed with Basel Cell on my Forehead. Lesson learnt in the sense of wearing adequate Sun Cream!!

I am really nervous as I’ve never had any sort of ‘illness’ like this before. I am 27 years old and after being diagnosed (4 days ago) I feel like my life has come crashing down on me. I’ve constantly had people tell me it’s self inflicted (Regular holidays and Sunbeds) I understand this is the root problem but I can’t help but feel guilty that I have this cancer. I feel almost to blame for my illness.

any help would be appreciated Blush

  • Hi  StephenJames8. Don't blame yourself as I have had 2 basal skin cancers. I am 73 years old and luckily have been healthy until this.  I have always used sun cream only had holidays in Cornwall and never ever used a sun bed, so it strikes anyone.  How are they going to deal with your skin cancer.  I had one removed near my nostril and upper lip by skin flap surgery and the other, which was nastier, was at the top of my nose right under my eye.  I had that removed with a skin graft.  I started my journey 12 months go, having my first operation in January and I am now fine. I saw a dermatologist first who referred me to a plastic surgeon, who was the best, such a brilliant surgeon, I was so lucky. This site has been my lifeline, made some good friends who supported me, and me them.  You can ask us anything, tell us you are scared, whatever you feel, tell us, as we have all been there. To say it is self inflicted to someone suffering from this is quite spiteful, there for the grace of god go I comes to mind.  These skin cancers aren't life threatening, but are nasty little beasts and as they are mainly on the face, you feel slightly embarrased by them.  Good Luck, keep in touch and ask away, we will help you through it. x

  • Hi StephenJames8

Like Harlyn said don’t blame yourself. It’s hard not to but you’re on the path to getting it sorted. I’m the same: healthy and then one appeared on my forehead just in my hairline. I’m 40 and thought I was always careful in the sun, unfortunately sometimes it’s just bad luck. But, you’ll be okay. I had Mohs surgery yesterday and they removed it, just like that! All gone!
Hope you’re getting seen to and any questions I’ve found the people here and always at hand!

  • Hi

Please don't blame yourself. Sometimes these things just happen. What you need is support not blame.

I'm sure that from now on you'll be extra careful in the sun but even that is not a guarantee.

Please keep in touch on this site. It's invaluable as we're all dealing with similar problems and the support is amazing.

I've had a basal cell removed from my nose.

It's frightening and a shock but you'll get through it and nobody here is going to tell you it's your own fault and self inflicted
