Fluid on brain

Has anyone got experience of having fluid on the brain after radiotherapy or surgery?

Mum was diagnosed with melanoma on her back and squamous carcinoma on her scalp in July. She had radical radiotherapy on her scalp and surgery to remove the melanoma in September.

Since September, we noticed some serious confusion which has been getting worse. Yesterday, after fighting for a month to prove she doesn't have a uti, a CT scan showed significant fluid on the brain. She was due an MRI today but it hasn't happened.

Any one been through the same?

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the skin cancer group which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I'm sorry to read that your mum has been diagnosed with both melanoma and squamous cell carcinoma and is suffering with fluid on her brain.

I have had surgery to remove a melanoma and also to remove a basal cell carcinoma but did not suffer from a build-up of fluid on my brain.

Your mum should have been assigned a skin cancer nurse specialist (SCNS) sometimes known as a keyworker to help with any questions she might have. Has your mum spoken to the SCNS to ask what has caused this fluid build-up? Has the MRI just been delayed or was there some other reason that your mum wasn't able to have it?

When you feel up to it, it would be great if you could pop something about your mum's diagnosis and treatment so far into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
