My father has BCC removal tomorrow

My father has had his skin condition for about three years, gp has tried every cream on the market with no improvement and finally after getting a two week referral, biopsy the day he was seen, and he is having it removed tomorrow.  For about a month the area has been weeping and has had to be dressed by district nurse twice a week.

I wonder what to expect tomorrow, the area is about the size of a 50 pence piece and in his armpit. I am suspecting this is going to be difficult to heal because of where it is. Has anyone had this done and can tell me the plan please. Is it stitched, packed and left open or what?

  • Morning Ddg1  Not sure about how to answer as both my skin cancers were basal cell, removed by excision and skin flap or skin graft.  I would imagine the area that size they may do a skin graft but not sure.  Pukketyboo on this site may see your request and answer as she has had a bcc removed with the wound left open to heal.  I am sure she will reassure you for your Dad.  Gp's do not seem to understand these skin cancers as many people on this site have been seeing their Drs for a long time before they refer them and when they do it is a skin cancer.  I have a friend going for an operatioon for one on her calf on Monday and she has been told it will be an open wound and will require dressing.  I wish your Dad good luck and keep in touch as we are all happy to advise one another as we are able. x

  • Thank you so much for your reply. I will let you know the outcome tomorrow.  X

  • Hi Ddg1

I've recently had a basal cell removed from my nose which was left to heal by secondary intention. Being left open to heal on its own will require regular dressings and monitoring. The surgeon used a special dressing in my open wound that swelled up and applied pressure for a couple of weeks with steri strips over the top. After that it was just the steri strips.

I'm not sure what they will do in the case of your dad as it's in  bit of an awkward place but skin heals well given time and care. Mine was also misdiagnosed for almost three years. It was only on my insistence that I got a referral and I think this is what we need to do if something isn't right with our skin.

Hope your dad gets on ok and please let us know

  • Thank you for your message. My Dad got on very well.. the whole thing was removed, the surgeon stitched all around the circle of the hole and pulled It up tight and fastened it. So just one stitch to remove! Today he reports it is quite sore but not unbearable. Good job all round I think.

  • Glad to hear your dad's surgery went well. It must be a big relief all round
