Probable forehead flap in a week’s time, how to prepare?

In 5 days I have MOHs surgery to remove BCC from crease of my nose, and 2 days  later the first of two stage reconstruction surgery.  The plastic surgeon said that the lesion was substantial and I would probably need a forehead flap, and he recommended it be done under general anaesthetic.

I didn’t expect this for what seemed to me like a small spot, and I was too shocked to ask questions of the consultant, who was very offhand and casual and just wanted me to leave his office quickly.

Can I make any useful preparations?

Can I go outside afterwards?  I have a hat I wear in the sun, but it sits on my forehead.  Should I buy some sort of face covering?  Online  I have seen caps with veils attached for fishing, is it worth getting one?

Can I wear my reading glasses?

What about my 6 month old puppy?  We are so attached to each other, but she is very boisterous and I am scared that she will jump up at my face.  Can I wear a face guard of some kind or do I just have to shut her out of my room?

I am lucky to be 68, married to a wonderful man, and not really bothered about my looks, but am I going to make people feel sick to look at me?

Am I making a big fuss about nothing?

  • PS I should say, I am really grateful that I have a treatable, curable cancer.  There are people using this site who would love to swap places with me.  In fact I am already cured, if I didn’t mind having a piece of nose missing.  And that will be fixed and good as new.  Better in fact if I feel like growing a moustache.

And I have just got word I am going!

  • It’s  particularly tough when you are in the moment when your anxiety is high anyway then exacerbated by the mistakes.  Try to let it go.  It sounds like you are in good hands, joking aside.  It’s great you don’t need the ear cartilage and tucking the flap inside the nostril seems a good plan because it should hide the join.  Don’t worry about the hair - you can have treatment to stop that growing if necessary.  I was worried about that too but it’s fine.

  • Thank you. All good except for splitting headache.  They gave me 2 codeine and that has taken the edge off.

  • Glad to see it is over for you, now to recover. Havr you got to stay ibn for the night.  Let us know how you progress, we are all here for you  Not a nice experience at all, but we do care about you xx

  • The anaesthetist stabbed me twice in left hand and said oh you do have tricky veins.  He used the right inner elbow ok and said next time he will go straight for that.  Gr.  He did say as he put me under that he d given me stuff to keep my BP up and every possible anti nausea, so he did listen, and that seems to be working.

I have been to loo, in lovely ensuite, you do get some things for the money.  Lovely mirror to view lovely flap.  Thank heavens for Google as I knew what to expect.

The healing is under way Relaxed

  • Hi lucky lass

So glad your surgery is over.

You sound incredibly upbeat considering the surgery you've just had.

Please keep us posted on your recovery which I hope will be quick and uneventful.

Hugs and cuddles to your puppy

  • Phew all done x

Surely you can’t see the flap?  Isn’t it all bandaged up?

  • I am safely home, propped up on bed with puppy beside me in her crate while we watch our favourite TV show, the Doghouse.  Husband getting dinner.  Life is good.

  • Hi Luckylass so pleased to read you are home and it is all over for you.  What an ordeal you had too.  Nite Nite hope you have a reasonable nights sleep and hubby is looking after you.  Let us know how you are in the morning. xx

  • No there are no dressings except for a bit of sponge stitched at the top of my forehead and another in my ear.  I don’t see how they would put a bandage on, unless maybe the full Egyptian mummy look.  I have an appointment in a weeks time to have stitches out so maybe after that.  It looks even more dramatic today because of the blood that has oozed around all the edges.  I have no plans to leave the house for now, but if I feel up to it in a few days I may pop into a shop or two just for the mischief of seeing how people react.

They managed another little error in my admin but this one worked in my favour.  When I saw the surgeon pre op, he said because I was at the end of the list he wouldn’t be able to visit post op because he had to be at another hospital in the afternoon.  At about 5 pm the ward staff were ready to send me home, but I said they hadn’t given me a supply of the antibiotic ointment.  No, they said firmly, nothing in their notes about ointment. I assured them that the surgeon had definitely said I should apply it twice daily.  I knew what the stuff was because I had used it after my biopsy.  I refused to leave without it so they said they would phone the surgeon.  I was happy to have some more time in the nice comfy bed before the journey home.  Then about 6 pm to my surprise the surgeon appeared.  Ointment was on its way.   He had forgotten to write the prescription before he left.  So this was good because he was able to update me on how things went. He had taken a bit of cartilage from my ear, which was better for me as he didn’t have to stretch the forehead flap as much.  I hadn’t even noticed my ear, so I was glad that he had told me.  And also just to hear him say everything had gone smoothly.
