Hi. My husband just found out he has prostate cancer. He is waiting on a biopsy and bone scan to see how far it has spread. We are both finding it really hard. He isn’t sleeping and I just don’t know what to do or say to help. He is only 53.
Hi Ricegirl
I'm so sorry you're both going through this. I have also just been diagnosed at 53, so I understand just how overwhelming those first few weeks can be. The period between hearing the word "cancer" and having all the results is often the hardest because your mind naturally fills in the gaps.
The good news is that prostate cancer is very treatable, and the biopsy and bone scan are there to build a complete picture so the doctors can recommend the most appropriate treatment. Many men, even with more advanced disease, go on to live for many years with a good quality of life.
Sending you both my very best wishes. I hope the biopsy and bone scan come back with reassuring news and that you have a clear treatment plan soon.
Thank you so much for your reply. I’m so sorry you are going through it too. You are right that the unknown waiting period is very hard and my husband is naturally thinking the worst. We have a 10 year old daughter so trying to keep things as normal as possible for her is very hard. She already knows something is going on but we don’t want to tell her until we know more about the prognosis. All the best to you on your journey too.
It is completely natural to feel overwhelmed and fear the worst. I have a 17-year-old daughter, and I found it most helpful to gather as much information as possible before speaking with her. Even then, it was a difficult conversation to navigate.
