Hi Everyone. On the 1 year anniversary of finishing treatment for head and neck cancer, I have recieved the news that my prostate looks suspicious after an mri. Im completed devastated to be possibly facing another journey. Apparently, the image of my prostate has scored a 4 out of 5, im not sure exactly what that means, although it has prompted a biopsy next Thursday. Can anyone explain what this 'score' actually means? Thank you in advance.

  • Hi Rich , sorry to hear

Scoring of 4 or 5 is PIRADS both meaning likely to be cancer although biopsy needed to confirm.

If you have a MRI it should say a bit more about any tumour size and location within the gland.

You don't give any PSA figures which can sometimes help

    Best wishes

  • Hi  - the score of 4 or 5 is known as PIRADS score. It just means that the radiographers have a clear image on the MRI.  The biopsy will give much more detail - histology is king in this case: your Gleason score will come from the biopsy and will give you an idea of how aggressive the cancer is (if it is confirmed as being cancer, of course).  Don’t be too down about it : it sounds like very early sight of it (if it is) and, as such, should be curable.   AW

  • Hi again  - just looked at your profile pic. You look fit and relatively slim. This is probably why the MRI image was sharp. As I said, the ongoing diagnosis and treatment for you (if necessary) is very likely to be successful as you appear to have a lot going on your favour.   Take a read of my bio - I’m relatively fit too and my pathway is described. Note that my prostate cancer had some aggressive traits, but so far it’s been knocked on the head.   AW

  • Hi alpine wanderer, just read your bio, that's a great result, well done. I guess I'm getting too het-up, too quickly. But having been through the brutal journey of head and neck, I'm automatically drawn to some negative thoughts. Yes, I'm (or was!) fairly fit, cycling to work everyday and at weekends, but this vile disease, as we know can strike anyone in any part of their body at anytime. But I did enjoy reading your story of success. Defo gave me a bit of hope.

  • Hi  that’s what I call bad luck after getting over head and neck.  However, if you are new to this site, the majority of PCa patients on here are curable, so not all bad news.  Don’t get het up about the PIRADS score once you have had a biopsy it isn’t any value or meaning.  You will be fine.  Ask any questions and have a look at others bio by clicking on their name or avatar.

    Best wishes, David
