Hi, I am new to the group. I am currently going through radiotherapy for prostate cancer. i have done 16 sessions but the pain I am currently experiencing peeing is getting hard to cope with. Not a burning pain just pain peeing with a weak flow. it’s especially painful in the night.

Has anyone else experienced this and do you have any tips to ease this oain? i am taking Ibuprofen and paracetamol regularly. I am very worried how bad this pain will get .

I am so sorry to hear of your symptoms whilst going through your Radiotherapy. Do you have a specialist nurse appointed to you through the hospital, I would give her a call in office hours, failing this contact the 24 hot line if you have one and they should be able to communicate with your team.

If you do phone have your hospital number and nhs number available.

They also most always ask for your Temperature as one of their first questions.

Good luck and I hope you get some much needed assistance

    Take care

  • Hi  , you need to talk to your team before any further treatment.  I am sure this is a known side effect, but just make sure they understand how bad it is for you and your concerns.  My own thought is that perhaps you need something like Tamsulosin while under treatment.

  • Hi Bonnie598b603d9

Totally agree with David2017 that you need to let your RT team know about the problem at your next treatment session as there's no benefit suffering in silence.  They have vast experience of all the issues men have whilst undergoing RT & will be able to help.

  • Hi
Like others my advice would be an immediate phone call to your oncology team. I was given a direct phone number to get in touch with my team when my RT began.

  • I am not a medic, but read in some of the dos and don'ts of my medication not to take Ibuprofen, however, I think it was my Abiraterone/Prednisone tablets.

    Just as a precaution.

~Also, 9 sessions in and I was discussing my discomfort (that is the only way I could describe it, heavy, irritant passing water) yesterday with the Radiographers. Well known side effect, lots of water, stay away from things that dehydrate you - namely alcohol and caffeine.

    Best of luck... almost there.

  • PS No alcohol or caffeine during past 2 weeks and I still suffer.

  • It sounds counter intuitive to drink more when having problems peeing but great point  makes.  Keep very well hydrated. Force yourself to take at least 2 litres minimum per day (nothing to dehydrate you).

    Best wishes, David

  • Thank you. I am also on the same medication and was unaware of not taking Ibuprofen. I will check with my oncologist about that . I too have stopped with caffeine and alcohol. I never thought I would say these words, but peppermint tea seems to help a little. I think a part of it is having to fill my bladder and desperation of then releasing it. Hopefully it will ease after treatment.
