Cancer on the move!!

Hello,

My husband was diagnosed in 2020 with Advanced prostate cancer, with mets in lymph nodes, pelvis and 2 ribs. He has done really well with his oral chemo/hormone treatment until shock last night.

He had checkup scans in January this year and even though his PSA was rising all looked good and we were told not to worry about it.

Last night he was admitted to hospital with what we thought was a bad uti infection and on new scans it showed the cancer has spread to liver and lower lung nodes since January!

I always understood this was a slow growing cancer and we cannot get our heads around this complete bolt out of the blue, it feels as bad as when he was first diagnosed.

My daughter and I are so scared, does this mean there is nothing else they can do? we have to wait for oncology and probably more scans in case it's anywhere else, but the terror is choking us.

Has anyone else had it spread so quickly before and if so what have they said can be done?

Sorry, to go on but just trying to sort my head out about this shock.

thank you much.

  • Stay calm for more information and data that can help you interpret what’s new. Thinking of you both and the OH. Fingers crossed you get some good news.

  • Thankyou, we are trying to be calm, but he's just been diagnosed with Sepsis as well so a lot to take on in 24hrs. Hopefully they are able to offer some type of treatment to slow things down. Thankyou for your thoughtful words.

  • Hello

I am so sorry to read your post, and can understand your anxiety. I think the hospital will deal with the Sepsis first before finding out just where the cancer has spread to.

Oncology should have an idea of how to treat this new spread as you say he's already had some more scans. It's a case of stabilising him first and then a treatment plan next.

I can understand the worry for you and your daughter - for some support is there a "Maggie's" you can visit at the hospital (Link - Maggie's). There's also our Support Line on 0808 808 00 00 (8am to 8pm 7 days a week) please do give them a ring.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Thanks Brian, we are just taking it hour by hour at the moment, they are pumping him full of antibiotics for the sepsis/chest infection (both lungs we found out this morning) so it just hope for the best at present.

I'm sure they will speak to us about the cancer when he is stable and hopefully a plan can be put in place to slow down/halt it's progress, just a shock as he was doing so well for the last 5 1/2 years.

Thankyou for your advice and kind words.

  • Sending much love to you, your husband and family at this difficult time, fingers crossed you will get some positive news soon x

  • Thank you so much, people on here are so kind. x

  • Sorry to be reading your post . The important thing is just be with your husband and take it day by day . Once he is feeling better that’s the time to ask questions . Sending you and your family huge hugs

  • Thank you, they said today that they need to stabilise him before worrying about any cancer meds (he is not able to take his usual  ones at the moment), as the infection is the biggest worry now. Just concerned with no meds at all it will move more, we just have to hope it doesn't and hit it hard when he recovers. Thankyou again.

  • Hi  , PCa is slow growing so a few weeks don’t matter but obviously since January things could change.  You don’t say what his rise in PSA was in January, but that sometimes triggers more investigations.  As others have said, the priority is to deal with the sepsis and then hit the PCa.

    Best wishes, David

  • Thankyou, we have been told today that his kidneys are failing, so to prepare. By some chance he might make it but all in the hands looking after him now, we are just numb as things have gone down so fast.
