I'm not sure if this is the right place or if I'm doing it right, (Not great with technology.) Today I returned home from a Robotic Prostatectomy at Nottingham City Hospital, diagnosed with stage3 advanced prostate cancer in December 2024 after a routine blood check. The staff in the Urology centre, & after care in the Harvey 2 Ward were amazing. With all the nasty things that are going on in the world today, it really restores your faith in human nature to know that there are such lovely people about. Working 12 hour shifts (I believe)they never stopped, nothing too much trouble. No matter how much people criticise the NHS I think it's the best & envy of the world when it comes to the staff level. It's only the bureaucracy & politics that seem to want to spoil it. My Consultant assures me the procedure went well. The prostate has gone away to a laboratory to be analysed, & another blood PSA check in 3 months time will reveal if its been successful. At this moment although in a fair bit of pain & having to get used to a catheter, I'm so greatfull that I've been given this second chance, maybe see the grandchildren grow up, & all thanks to these wonderful people.
Hello KBee
Yes, you are in the right place so welcome to the Prostate family.
It sounds like you have had super service with our NHS and I am so pleased you have been treated well. It's great when people acknowledge the NHS can and do get most things right.
I wish you well with your recovery and hope your histology comes back good and I wish you a low PSA test.
If you need anything or have any questions feel free to post and you will receive answers from Community members who have "been there - done that".
Best wishes - Brian

I am a Macmillan volunteer.
Although early days, up until my prostate operation I was employed as a Plater/Welder working from projects with Rolls Royce to railway bridges, all heavy metal work & not something I think even if nature is kind to me I will be able to return too. It's a young man's game & think it would be selfish after 40 years in the industry to undo everything the wonderful surgeons have done for me.
I'm currently on Statutory Sick Pay, & only work for a small family business. I don't want to lead them on thinking I may return, although I really wish I could when my body is telling me it's had enough.
If & when I'm able to work I think I would consider a total career change.
Has anyone else out there been in similar circumstances, if so how did you approach the situation & what was the outcome.
Any advice greatly appreciated.
I’m on SSP hoping to return after chemo ends but I have had a similar worry.
But,
I’m 61 and was fit to work before the chemo started, and mentally I want to return to a useful occupation if allowed. I’m not leading on anyone as I’ve been upfront with every aspect of my treatment. You shouldn’t think that way either but if you’ve decided to finish with the family business then tell them and concentrate on yourself.
There are many variables but only you know if you can manage physically and financially and mentally.
Good luck
