New diagnosis

Hi all,

I was diagnosed yesterday. My PSA is 7 and Gleason is 3 & 4. I had already researched and from my consultation have been told they can monitor me and could be fine for next 10 years or so. However, if I opt for surgery now it could get rid of the Cancer completely. Just interested to see what other men going through similar have experienced. If there is a chance to be rid rather than having the cloud hanging over me. Thanks

  • Hi please read ky OH details in tge bio  - click on the armchair  - it may help.  Happy to answer any questions

  • Hi !

With your diagnosis you have a lot to choose from and todays radiation methods are several and, like prostatectomy, done with curative intent. So, I would suggest that you also ask for a second opinion with a oncologist to see what they offer in terms of treatment pathway, unless you’ve decided to do a prostatectomy

  • Hi Scooby and welcome

Good news that a low key affair.

I was on active surveillance for 4 years and it went ok but in the end I did have to have treatment. Radiotherapy.

Could be worth hanging on for a while and monitoring as there are some people that can avoid treatment for many years.

Also surgery can give long term side effects although has to be said not for everything.

See what others say and also check on tumour size in mm which I am assuming is small

    Best wishes

    Steve

  • Thank you for your kind replies. My initial reaction is just “whip it out” and worry about the side effects from that if it means the cancer is gone but worried that I am being too reactive. Just don’t want to be in the position in 4 or 5 yrs that I have treatment anyway.

  • I would just say that you don't need to rush into things, time on your side, monitor for a while , see what happens , take another look PSA etc at end of year

  • Hi again.   You will see from the bio that my OH had the same reaction and although he has had to undergo further treatment he does not regret his decision.  We could not cope with the ongoing worry of active surveillance and as his initial diagnosis was found to be wrong when they actually operated we are glad we didn't wait.  Not sure of your age or personal circumstances but the possibility of ED is something to definitely be aware of.

  • Thank you all again. You’ve given me food for thought and no doubt I’ll be back soon for more insight from you.

  • Hello Mark ( Welcome to the group although I am so sorry to find you here.

With such a low PSA and Gleason 7 you should have plenty of time to think about your options. As well as AS (Active Surveillance) you would be able to pick from:

    Surgery - Radiotherapy - Brachytherapy.

You need to research into these and remember your treatment will affect any partner you have so think of them too.

As a group we are all happy to answer any questions you may have.

    Best wishes - Brian.
