Hi everyone and happy Easter ( weather lovely in Brighton)!

We had an amazing appointment with oncology yesterday where they offered Jacob Zoledronic acid. This will administered once a year intravenously and the aim is to rebuild his bones which were affected by the HT ( he had osteopenia before the PC).

We read all the side effects etc. I am keen to know if anyone had an experience with this treatment.

Lots of love

Dafna

  • Hi Dafna, good to hear from you and Jacob.  Not such a great day here in Winchester but dry.

I have no experience of the infusion.  Was Jacob on Alendronic Acid tablets or is this a new experience?  David

  • Good morning

a close friend has the infusion once a year following breast cancer  and says said she had flu like symptoms after the first but was fine thereafter.

glad to hear you had a good meeting as that perks you up no end .

    Enjoy the weekend.

Happy Easter to one and all .

    Hugs

  • Hi David,

Jacob cannot take any of it as tablets due to gastritis therefore they offered the zoledronic with intravenous. The more I read about it the more its look like a good treatment but the side effects are a bit scary.

    How are you?

  • Hi Liz,

Thank you so much for your reply. It is encouraging! how are you both doing?

  • Hey Dafna,

we are getting ready for a holiday. Very apprehensive but have insurance to cover all eventualities.

We saw the Oncologist end of March and OH is doing well other than an issue with his liver function but getting regular blood tests . He is having it done on Tuesday and the oncologist will phone us with the results ( before we leave )  . So if there’s still an issue he will either half his Abiraterone or stop it for a short time . I was worried it would cause the cancer to start flourishing but he said it wouldn’t . His PSA is undetectable. He’s walking every morning and gym at least 3 times a week for resistance work out. So his muscle tone is improving and it’s making him feel better.

    thank you all for caring

    best wishes & Happy Easter

  • Hi Dafna,

It's always a worry when you read a list of side effects of any treatment (including something as common as paracetamol), but the important thing to remember is that it's highly unlikely that Jacob would get all of them.  The main thing to focus on is the good it will do.

Hope you have a great Easter - very jealous that you have wonderful weather as it's been tipping down all day in Cornwall (or to put a positive spin on it by referring to Cornish sunshine).

    Best Wishes

    Brian

  • I will be interested to see your responses and hear your news post treatment. My OH has been taking Alendronic acid for some time now but had a Dexa scan last week to see if he also needs, presumably, Zolendronic acid too.

    Regards

    Gina

  • Hi Brian,

Oh you made me lough with the positive spin...

Thank you for the reply. Have a lovely Easter.

  • Hi Gina,

of course I will report back but there is a least 2 months waiting time. We feel somehow good about this treatment which originally intended for women with breast cancer to avoid the cancer coming back to the bones. So I convince myself now: whats not to like?

    Have a great Easter

    Lots of love

  • Dafna, the side effects are always scary, but in reality they are fairly rare.  I have been on Alendronic for over 5 years (the recommended max) but without it would probably have more problems.  To be honest, I have been struggling a little recently with fatigue increasing since my SABR and a recent cold has taken me to the lowest point but the recent warm spell has definitely helped.  Keep going and love to you both.  David
