PSA Test after RT

Hi

I'm new to the group so please bear with me if this has been covered before. I was diagnosed 12 months ago and my Gleason score was 4+3. I've recently finished my RT just over 2 months ago after 6 months of HT ( Prostap 3 ). My last PSA reading before RT was 1.08 and my next one is between 6-9 months after the RT finished which will be sometime between July and October. Is there a PSA reading range  that I should be hoping for realistically?

Thanks

Sezlez

  • Hi seziez

So I presume HT now over and obviously RT is.

Some remnants of HT probably still in the system but hopefully by the time next PSA is done u will be clear.

Difficult to say what PSA should be after the RT and HT, probably the 2nd and 3rd PSA will mean more.

When I finished RT after 6 months my PSA was 1.33 , yours was 1.08 before RT , so hopefully somewhere between 1.00 - 2.00 when U have it checked, or less obviously.

Just the most important thing is that no upward trend so it's going to take some time to establish that but fingers crossed you'll be ok.

    Best wishes

  • my psa was 505 when I was first tested. after 4 week of ht it came down to 133. so hoping my next test might be a bit like yours

  • Hi Sezlez and welcome. Ideally you are looking for a value below the 1.08 and heading downwards. The radiotherapy continues working for 18+ months at which time you are looking to reach your nadir (lowest level). The aim is that it should be negligible but in reality this doesn't happen for a lot of men.  To complicate things there is a phenomenon called the PSA bounce which can occur between 12 and 18 months when you might see a little upturn in PSA but it should only be short lived. The type of radiotherapy you have had is also linked to the likelihood of having a bounce. I am not sure whether you are still on hormone therapy but with a Gleason score of 4+3 you are at intermediate risk and this often means a slightly longer course of treatment. Once you come off the HT then the testosterone levels start to recover and this can also result in a rise in PSA. The numbers that the experts are looking for in assessing whether there is a recurrence is a PSA of 2 about your nadir or 3 consecutive rises in a short period of time. I know it sounds complicated so if you have any questions then please ask and we will try and help.

  • Thanks Steve

I've got everything crossed atm. Got a telephone appointment with the oncologist next month so they'll be crossed until then lol Laughing

  • Hi Alwayshope

Thanks for your response. I finished my HT in mid-October. No sign of my testosterone levels returning as my libido is non existent! Not sure if I'll have any more HT but that's a question I'll be asking my oncologist next month
