Hi

im 54, white. Ive had yearly psa blood test since 50 and its always been 0.5ng. Also had 2 DRE conducted by my GP, last one was 3 months ago. Normal. I dont have any problems with urination or ejeculation but i have being recently diagnosed with liow testosterone which explains my low libido and ED.

however, 4 months ago i developed bone pain in my pelvis, hips and especially coccyx area. Its still here today and no resolpite. I have problems sitting and sleeping as i get a dull ache when i try to get comfortable.

i saw my GP who did the psa and DRE and he didnt seem worried. Did some other blood rests bone profile calcium fbc etc and told me ive probably hurt my coccyx exercising, even though i know i havent. This dull ache just wont let up.

Obviously as i have a stable low psa for 54 i believed what i was told. However, with chris hoy coming out with a diagnosis and his first symptom was bone pain it got me reading. I then read that you can still have prostate cancer with a low psa and bone pain can be a first symptom, and if its bone mets its terminal. Ive read agressive prostate cancer can have a very low psa.  So now im worried sick.

anyone here have a low psa and first symptom was bone mets? If this was an agressive prostate cancer would i have noticed anything else with urination, ejaculating or pooping etc.

Im unsure what to do next. My GP seems reluctant to anything as i have low psa and DRE was smooth. Do i demand to see a urolost? Pay private for mri?

thanks for reading

  • Hi

ive seen the urologist who did a dre and agreed there is a lump in my prostate. She sent me for an urgent mri which i had on friday 30th. Just waiting for the results now. They said within 2 weeks.

i hate this waiting. If its cancer its aggressive as my psa is 0.5.   I expect they will want to biopsy this lump and maybe a bone scan.

my shoulder is still bad. Night times are rhe worst, i just cant lay on my favoured left side and im a side sleeper.

im now on anxiety medication which is helping me get through all this.

  • Have you seen anyone specifically about your shoulder pain. It could very well be unrelated and be treated individually.  As I wrote before, it is so difficult sleeping on your side, if that is your preferred position when your shoulder hurts. Luckily mine seems better now, with just a little restriction in movement.

  • Hi  Glad to heart you feel better working through this. Excellent that you've had the MRI and not long now till you get the results. Hopefully all will be well .

  • Hi

i havent. When i visited my gp regarding my prostate they only want to deal with one thing at a time. I only get 10 minutes for the appointment. Last time was regarding anxiety meds. Next time i think it may need to be pain medication for my bone pains.

i expect i will need a biopsy and bone scan so it will all become clear if my shoulder and coccyx pains are due to my prostate.

  • Hi BW

The meds are beginning to work. Still cant concentrate on anything else but they are keeping my fears at bay at the moment. Hard to describe how the meds make me feel, that horrible feeling in the pit of my stomach isnt there, sorting of a calming effect.

  • Wow that sounds perfect! Not long to go now to get a better idea of whats happening.

  • Hi BW

still getting all the pains. Just cant seem to shake those, especially in bed at night. But the medication has definitely helped with my emotions and knocks me out at night.

unsure how long results take for the mri. Ive read 2 weeks but i would expect a phone call sooner if its bad news. I had the mri friday evening so i may get a call today or tomorrow. Im expecting they will want to do a biopsy of the lump.

  • Hi in some areas there are shortages of people who can read and interpret the scans, so it can take some while to get results through.  Glad the meds are calming you down and helping you sleep.  David

    Best wishes, David

Please remember that I am not medically trained and the above are my personal views.

  • Hi  I think you are right . If there was something “very advanced” they would certainly see it on the MRI and I would think they would notify you quickly, maybe within a day or so after.  So you haven’t heard anything yet and that’s a good sign, there’s certainly no emergency at this point. So one more week to go until you hear what’s next. Try to keep busy, it will be here soon enough and then you will know more about what’s happening.

  • Hi David

my mri was in Rotherham, unsure if Sheffield radiologists/urologists or whoever look at the scans are also used to combat backlog.   Sheffield also has a very good cancer care hospital called weston park. I have known many people transferred there once cancer was diagnosed.
