Scans

Hi again. Where do I start this one . Well as some of you know my husband  who has got prostrate cancer and Alzimers ..had another psa test in September , it was 210,  previous one in April was 126 . So he was sent for a full body scan and bone scan at ….., hospital. It was a miracle we got him there due to his fear of hospitals etc . Unfortunately the experience was a disaster , he had the dye injection and that was fine . But when he went in for the scan I’m afraid the technician was very abrupt and had no patience with him at all . He was very calm and relaxed when he went in . She came out and said He became restless and started to breath heavily and  then she said That’s it I’ve tried he won’t do as I say . I asked if she  could do it again and I’ll sit with him …but no. One week later he was sent to Stafford hospital again… he was calm . And this time he was relaxed and had the scan . the technician was amazing with him,  and invited me to sit in the room while he had it . She kept him calm and talking to him keeping him  relaxed,

, I hate to complain about our amazing NHS and in all my 80 years I’ve done nothing but sing there praises .BUT … I’m hoping any future scans he needs  will be at Stafford hospital. I’m now waiting for the results .

  • Good morning - I hope that is ok to say given your circumstances.

The Macmillan Support Team will do a cracking job, especially in dealing with palliative care.

Here's where I am not sure if I am teaching "grandmother to suck eggs" but you might want also to contact the Alzheimers Society dementia support line on 0333 150 3456. They certainly won't be any better than the Macmillan team , but they may a slightly different angle.

I am also concerned that YOU might need practical support to keep you going through a trying time. You mention your daughter so there is some family support, but I know from experience with my father-in-law just how difficult it is to keep going.

The Carers UK support line - 0808 808 7777 - should be able to give you contacts in your local area.

It is likely that you are also entitled to a carers assessment, which focuses on your needs rather than only considering your husband. You can find information here:

    https://www.carersuk.org/help-and-advice/practical-support/carer-s-assessment/

    I hope things go well.

  • Hi Steve , I really appreciate you taking the time to reply , the telephone numbers you have supplied will be of great help. At the moment we are coping my daughter is a great help and sorts out everything like information appointment's telephone calls etc,so tthat frees me to be here for my husband ,  due to my health problems ( COPD) I’m sure the time will come when physically I will need help , So having these numbers is the first step . Thank you , and take care , Gena7:

  • Thanks Steve (

That's a great reply and cracking support. I am on holiday in Turkey at the moment and access to many of my normal resources is unavailable here (I need a VPN to even write this).Sunglasses.

Thanks again for your super post.

    Best wishes - Brian.
