Prostate cancer the experts say can be cured. It all started with an enlarged prostate some 25 years ago. 15 years ago an expert told me I was more at risk of being run over than ever getting cancer. How wrong he was. My treatment at Guildford was scheduled for late April. Now problems with my bladder have stopped that happen so the treatment gets delays by 10 weeks and I now find myself having a procedure that will keep me in hosptal overnight on May 10th with an up 6 week recovery period. Any body on the site had something similar? If so how did you get on. Thank you for reading this

  • Hello  A warm welcome to the online Community.   I am sorry to find you here.

Yours is an interesting story - can you please educate us a little bit more?  Are you already on any treatment?  What is your diagnosis? Gleason Score, PSA and TNM staging? And would your operation be a TURP by any chance?

A few answers and we will be able to help  - you can read my 28 month journey - shorter than yours by clicking on my avatar.

I look forward to hearing from you regarding the above.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hi Brian, thank you for replying to me. My head is all over the place. May 10th TURP, yes. 1 four weekly injection. My medication was changed to Tamsolosin in January. I had been on Doxtrine and Finastride (please excuse the spelling). My PSA was stable on about 8 (16) but a steady climed over the last few years and it led my consultant to insist I had samples taken again but this time under an anaesthetic. This was done just before Christmas I did not have a good Christmas and A & E become my best friend when I look back over the past 4 months. The recent PSA had come down to 1. Good news I was told. I will go and find your avatar now but your comment of 28 months seems a little worrying. David

  • Hi  David

Ah! You are in good hands. Tamsulosin is given to people with an enlarged Prostate - not always with cancer (See King Charles!).  The enlarged prostate be it with or without cancer grows and restricts the urethra.

As this inhibits you passing water an operation called a TURP is required to shave the Prostate gland to clear the passage. Below is a link to the NHS guidance for the TURP.

    https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/transurethral-resection-of-the-prostate-turp/

I have had one, there's almost no pain, I was in hospital overnight and working two days later (although told not to do any heavy lifting!).

My Prostate journey has been a complicated one - you have nothing to worry about - but if you do have any further questions or worries please do come back to us.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hello Radiation David. I’m on Tamulosin capsules to regulate my  flow as my new companion was  squeezing my urethra and the specialist says surgery is unnecessary as the cancer has got outside anyway. I take my Tamulosin around 6pm so it has a few hours to work and does not keep me up and down so much overnight, unless I’ve been bad and had more than four pints in the pub!

  • Hi Radiation.

Good morning and welcome to the club nobody wants to be in but hey it's great to meet you today.

I was diagnosed with Terminal Prostate Cancer in June last year with a PSA off 1000+ at the age of 57.

Since then I have been on Hormone Therapy (tablets and injections) and my PSA numbers are now down to 0.2 "incredible"

The Cancer was found by mistake as I was having a bladder scan pre opp for a fitting off a "Super Pubic Catheter" as I have had a permanent catheter since 2005 following a Stroke and Brain Surgery.

Due to nerve damage my bladder was unable to empty fully casing many problems.

On finding the Cancer everything with regards to my bladder stopped but as my PSA numbers came down drastically I have now had my SPC operation done which is fantastic.

Please please let me know if there is anything else that you you like to know as I am very happy in helping/ supporting you in anyway required.

    Prostate Worrier.
