Ultra Hypofractionated RT (HYPO RT PC) - Any Experience?

I feel a lot more settled today, now that I have been allocated to a treatment pathway, albeit 4 to 6 weeks away.  It is, however, still quicker than if I were to also receive HT.

I opted out of HT and I will receive Ultra Hypofractionated RT.  This is 7 fractions on alternate days over 3 weeks, totalling 42.7 Gy - if I remember correctly.

This 'seems' not that far removed from the Royal Marsden SBRT 5 fraction protocol, although it has been available over the last 4 years.

Has anyone had any experience with HYPO RT?

I assume that with a higher Gy per fraction than that of 20 or 37 fractions, there could be a potential for greater toxicity.  Any information on the radiation side effects and tips to ameliorate them are welcome.

The usual pre-RT micro-enema and full bladder will be necessary.  A special diet has not as yet been mentioned.  I don't know if it is advisable to have low fibre or not.

Due to sensitivity I already use a daily shower emollient down below.  I assume the RT irritation is more in the upper pubic area above the genitals?

  • Hello   Fantastic - a plan - I assume you are now in a better place knowing you are moving onto the treatment pathway.

    * I can only assume the diet regime will be the same as for any RT treatment - nothing to give you wind - green leaf vegetables, beans, pulses, caffeine, alcohol, fizzy drinks and chewing gum.

    * You are correct about any RT irritation - the Radiologists can give a prescription for "Flamigel" if this is an issue.

Good luck with the treatment - keep us posted.

    Kind Regards - Brian.

  • Thanks, Brian for your continuous support.

Yes, although I have not commenced treatment, I feel a cloud has lifted.  I can now focus on other things, and possibly even plan a nice holiday for after the treatment ends.

I hope your next figure is the one you have been waiting for.

    Best wishes.

  • My PSA this month, 12 months after RT is 0.33 - happy days, my "nadir" reading is in August so I am hoping for a further reduction.

Travel insurance if you are going abroad reduces after RT has been completed so it's worth looking at that after RT has been completed.

    Best wishes -  Brian.
