Hi Everybody,

I have been stalking this group for a couple of months and found the information very helpful.

But have decided to introduce myself.

I am 63 and had a PSA test end of September which started me down the path that so many of you have already travelled.

My stats are

Gleason 4 + 4 (Grade 4) prostate adenocarcinoma diagnosed on the right side in 1 out of 17 of the total prostate biopsies. Index PSA 5.3

MRI showed 29cc prostate with PI-RADS4 lesion at the left anterior apical Prostate.  T2 NO

The MRI also showed up cysts on my kidneys.

My wife and I attended an appointment and we thought it was regards a recent ultra sound on my kidneys. But we walked totally un prepared into reviewing my biopsy results.

Like all of you, it came as a shock especially as my Father in law passed away 4 years ago from Prostate cancer.

If there is any good news , the surgeon said that it is contained which seems to be confirmed by the NO, but will be confirmed by a total body bone scan in 2 weeks.

I am veering towards a Radical Prostatectomy as I just want to get it our. We have an appointment with the Surgeon tomorrow.

I have a list of questions for him. I am quite anxious about ED and incontinence afterwards. ED because I have been very happily married for 41 years and would hate to lose that part of our relationship and Incontinence because I cover the UK and spend hours driving my car attending appointments with customers.

But at the end of the day the important point is to address the cancer.

Cheers and all the best for now

  • Hi Psticks.

A very warm welcome and glad you have found the group useful. Apparently there are a lot of 'stalkers', which is great but it is always nice to meet with new friends. You are welcome to join in any of the conversations and we have one thread headed' No specific Topic ' which can really go off piste with any subject. One thing that we have found is that it is good to have a sense of humour, we are not always serious, but it is our group and we rely on all the brilliant people here to share their experiences and to help each other.

Well done for putting the info on your profile and hope that all goes well tomorrow with the surgeon. From the information you have supplied it looks as if you are curable, subject to the nuclear scan. Wanting to 'get it out' is a natural reaction but remember that the surgeon may be stressing his own expertise. Can I suggest that you also consider things like Brachytherapy which has a similar response. I am sure others will come along and give you their experiences with the different alternatives and side effects, along with why they chose that particular pathway.

Please come back with any questions and we will try and help.

  • Many thanks for your advice Thumbsup

  • Hi Psticks

Seems like we are on a similar journey!! I was diagnosed with Prostrate cancer last Weds. Don't have as many details as you but told it's contained within the prostate at the moment and so at the moment I'm also leaning towards a radical prostratrcetomy. Seeing the surgeon next Weds to discuss the options but surgery seems like the way forward for me - just want rid of it. I'm 69 yrs old, still working and refusing to grow up!! Also a biker but in my case it's a BMW. Good luck on your journey and keep in touch as things progress.

  • Hello Herrman and welcome to the forum, Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. Good news your cancer is contained though, Hermann It's entirely your decision on treatment but can i ask why dld you to choose surgery over other treatments,

    Eddie

  • Welcome to the forum Psticks and what a full and detailed profile and can i echo  alwayshope;s words regarding surgeons and to keep an open mind regarding alternatives as your stats look very favourable to other treatments, but as we say it is your body and your choice, take care.

  • No definite decision made yet but talking it through with Macmillan nurse at the time I made it clear that I wanted rid and didn't want to go through what my late partner went through. Was widowed 5yrs ago after partner had 5yrs of cancer treatment (not Prostrate) which ended up with nothing but hospital appointment after appointment, no way to live!! I understand that it wouldn't suit everyone but I don't want cancer hanging over my head for years.

  • Totally understand wanting to get rid of the cancer as soon as possible, who wouldn't and with the memories of your partners experience, i can understand your wanting to get it over and done with. but surgery is no  guarantee of removing all the cancer and often comes with long term side effects. As you don't see the surgeon until Wednesday can you see what others on here with a similar diagnosis to you can share with you, I don't know your late partners cancer but prostate cancer, especially if caught early like yours  is nearly always treated with the intent to cure. i hope you make the best choice for you, take care.

  • Still very open minded about treatment options, all come with some side effects. Trying to find out as much as possible but nothing is guaranteed in this world! Thanks for your input.

  • I agree with Alwayshope.  My initial reaction as an “early T3a” (where they thought it might still be contained) was surgery “get it out” because there was radiotherapy as a back up. However, once I started doing my detailed research, I saw that there would be a 30% chance of needing radiotherapy afterwards, so I would have two sets of side effects. The surgeon told me that surgery includes the removal of the internal sphincter valve and so you rely on the external sphincter valve (pelvic floor muscles) - hence all the incontinence in the weeks or months following the operation.
I eventually settled on brachytherapy boost (see my profile for links to very informative videos and articles).  The main thing is that you should be curable , with such low stats, but you still have to wait for your bone and CT body scan to be sure. AW

  • Hi Herrman, really sorry to read about your partners experience. Some interesting info further down the thread regarding Prostatectomy, sphincter valves etc. Thought I had made my mind up but what d o you do? Might just head out on the bike and not return.
