Hi. I'm sorry if this seems unacceptable due to a non diagnosis.

But I've been diagnosed with an enlarged prostrate and have many symptoms I havve a PSA test the end of the month. My dad had prostate cancer at the same age I am now (51) my mam died front lung cancer and my sister had ovarian cancer.

I'm so worried. I have an understanding wife and I'm trying to remain absolutely positive but fear the worst, not for me but family..

I know I'm probably jumping the gun, but it's the fear of the unknown and what lies ahead.

Regards Jethro.

  • Hi Jethro

Welcome to the forum. Please don't apologise for posting. This is the place to come to share your concerns and get advice and support. The people on here are only to willing to help others before their diagnosis and share their joy when they are found not to have cancer.

You are on the right track to get your problems diagnosed and as your doctor may have told you, many men have have prostate problems which are not cancer. You are right that a family history can make it more likely, as in my case, but it's not certain. Even if you are diagnosed it can be at a very low level and for most people it is completely curable.

Feel free to ask anything and come back to us when you get some results.

  • Hello

A warm welcome to the online Prostate Cancer Community - don't worry you can join the club without a diagnosis - we all wish we were in your situation I can tell you!!Grin.

I can't say anything more than  (Cliff) has said - he's spot on. Keep being checked and it's fully treatable and can be cured. I had an initial PSA of 182 and am on a curative treatment path!

Feel free to post, ask questions and join in any conversations, you are most welcome. I hope you have a low PSA test result when it's due later.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Jethro, I too am in the same boat. I'm 57, had no real symptoms but two uncles have fallen foul of PC ( One cured 7 years ago and the other under surveillance ) and suggested that I take a PSA test just be sure.

Made an appointment, gave blood, got results and was asked to attend a face to face with my GP my PSA was slightly raised at 3.4. Shellshocked

Got a DRE and referred for an MRI scan - Had that on 10/11 and have to see a Urology specialist on 11/12.

The waiting can be tough at times but coming on here and reading through other peoples journey helps to get things in perspective. The guys on here have first hand knowledge of the process and give great advice.

You have everything to be positive about.

  • Thanks all for your words of wisdom...

Well I went and had bloods and an x-ray last week.

Today I had a letter from doctors (local GP) to have a meeting to  discuss the results a recent test.

    In the new year..

Feel like I've gone a step backwards.

  • Hello

Yes - I can fully understand how you feel. However as the meeting is scheduled for the New Year - the news perhaps isn't too bad?

May I suggest - and it depends on your GP practice - give them a ring, tell them the wait is causing you anxiety and can they either bring forward the meeting or do it earlier by telephone.

Waiting for results is never a good time and it's not a step backwards - you have had the tests.

    I hope this helps.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hi Jethro

As has already been suggested go to your GP and ask for paper copies of the results, then come and let us know, plenty of people on here who can give u best advice regarding the results but as also already been said prob not too much to worry about if they're talking about  NY appointment

    Best wishes
