Hi,

Haven’t actually been diagnosed yet but fear the writing is on the wall after PSA score ( 3.4 )  and DRE. Waiting to attend the urologist now, which is brutal.
Does the group think a low PSA score is a sign of early detection ? And if so, does it help with the options of treatment ?
Im very much in the dark here . . .

  • Hi

I have replied on the other thread. - Your PSA is so low that in normal circumstances you wouldn't be facing any treatment - however with an "enlarged prostate" and "hip pain" the GP is taking a "bib and braces" approach.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hi Mac3

Sorry to hear your news. Everyone on here has been through the shock of diagnosis and know how you are feeling. I have found this place is a great for advice and support and the Macmillan helpline is also excellent. The people on there are so knowledgeable.

3.4 is a low reading. I assume your GP found something in the DRE to merit further investigation? The truth is that you will not know either way until you have further investigations. The next step being an MRI.

I had a lower PSA than you, and was found to have cancer. Equally there are lots of people with a much higher PSA who don't have it. I am not a medical professional but from the videos I've seen made by the top UK surgeons, at this stage, the PSA is a measure of how 'leaky' your prostrate is. Even if cancer is identified, with that number it is likely to be contained within the prostate, at an early stage and completely curable. Also there are different levels of 'aggressiveness' and some are so mild that no action is needed. Just regular PSA tests.

There is no point in saying not to worry, everyone does. Just try to keep in perspective that it may be nothing.

Feel free to ask me anything.

    Good luck

    Cliff

  • PSAs are unpredictable, mine was only 4.3 when I was diagnosed stage 4, each and every one of us are different for sure.

  • I have my scan this Friday due to a fortunate cancellation ( the original date 4/12 so mightily relieved at this ). This has lifted the doom a fair bit but I'm just keen to find the results and get the ball rolling. Many thanks

  • Brian, I've just read through your timeline there, it's quite a journey but very inspirational and so uplifting when I read about Bell Day  - Brilliant.

Thanks for the kind words over the last few days, it really has helped.

Scan on Friday, so fingers crossed for a good outcome.

  • Hello Ian

I am so pleased that things are better for you and indeed moving in the right direction - I to will keep my fingers crossed on Friday - as you say let's hope for a good outcome.

We are all different when it comes to this cancer but as it's been said on other threads - having a positive attitude is half the battle, the second half is getting the right treatment.

Keep us posted with your results and the next part of the journey.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • I had my MRI scan on Friday morning so now it’s more waiting until the results come back. Today has been quite tough for me . . . I’ve come on to the forum to seek inspiration

  • HI Ian

It's a waiting game this Cancer - It's a tough old time but take it from me, it gets better - we have a Community member on another thread who went through 4 months of waiting and tests to find there was no cancer. The thing with you is that you are on the pathway and will soon have some news as to just what is the cause of your "hip pain", and once you know you can move forward.

They are a great set of people on this forum and all realise that a positive attitude is 50% of the battle here. Yes, we do have bad news some days but the majority of posts are positive - you are doing great so far - keep us posted when you have some news and we can move on together.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Thanks Brian,

I'm trying to stay positive and coming on here certainly helps.
