Hi there I am Ryan from east London  48 yr gay male diagnosis was yesterday and  treatment offered was to remove prostate via robotics,  all very much to take in.  Macmillan have been wonderful since my first phonecall last Saturday before I got my result and I did manage to call  them last night as I returned from the hospital alone and really needed to speak to someone and they were brilliant.  X

  • Hi and welcome!

I can't comment on your diagnosis, as I was forced down the HT/RT Road, but there will be others on here who can.

The day you are told is a massive shock. Read up all you can, about the various ways your PC can be attacked and look at the one that suits you. Without your stats, it's difficult to be sure, but, it sounds like you have all options available to you. You have time to decide - PC is slow growing generally, and you are not obliged to follow the consultants advice.

If you can let us know your stats - PSA and staging - that would give us a better idea of where you are.

Yes, the Macmillan nurses are great!

    Regards

  • Hello Ryan

im really sorry to hear about your diagnosis. That big dollop of bad news is a massive shock and takes you men and your loved ones by storm. Please rest assured that, although you may be feeling shocked and frightened right now these emotions do settle in time. We have all been there and recognise and understand how you are feeling. You are not alone!

I agree with Brian - do your own research. Ask questions here, read up on facts and figures etc (www.prostatecanceruk.org have some excellent information leaflets as a starting point), ask your doctors and nurses etc. this way you will get to know what treatment options there are and what side effects to expect and what pathway decisions you can make that feel the best option for you.

prostate cancer also appears to be familial. I would advise telling your close male family members about your diagnosis so that they can get regular PSA tests - even more essential if you are of black Afrocaribbean ethnicity as the risks of getting prostate cancer are higher than for white ethnicity.

Finally, can I ask you to be aware that your partner and other loved ones will be having their own emotional responses to this diagnosis? As a wife, I found it incredibly difficult through those first months.

I wish you all the very best on this journey

  • Hi Ryan

Your stats are pretty good and I can see why they are suggesting you go for the op.

All treatments carry potential side effects so choose with open eyes.

It must be very hard being on your own at this time - have you a Maggies Centre anywhere near? If you have, try them, as I've heard good reviews from others on here.

  • Oh, Stuart! I’m so sorry! I am getting too used to seeing Brian’s ( always very sound) advice! I won’t say any more as I think the harder I try to appease ruffled feathers, the deeper I dig my hole! Sincere apologies to both you and Brian:)

  • Hi WW

As I say not a problem. Thought I was going mad!
