Hello all.

I'm 59 and recently been diagnosed with PC. After PSA reading of 5.45 I had MRI scan and biopsy. My Gleason reading came back as 3+4=7

Have been offered surgery RT with HT and brachytherapy.

I'm still in shock with diagnosis. Trying to read lots on the subject and which treatment to take. I don't know what to do and burying my head alot.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

  • You have caught it VERY early- you should be completely cured.
How old are you?  Any more details from the MRI?  What are your dates so far?
you should have no need to rush to decide (personally, with those figures, I would have the prostate removed) - note new NHS guidelines:

    • no more than 2 months (62 days) wait between the date the hospital receives an urgent referral for suspected cancer and the start of treatment
    • no more than 31 days wait between the meeting at which you and your doctor agree the treatment plan and the start of treatment
  • Ah, sorry, just spotted your age! At 59 you are a good candidate for removal

  • Thank you for the reply. Why would you have the surgery if you were me, is it purely because of my age?

  • Partly that and also low PSA and Gleason. If you can get it all out in one go (with a surgeon who does many of these procedures), then that’s it. Cured. I’m no expert though!  Just new to the site: early T3a, not even had biopsy yet!

  • Hi Razor

It is a difficult decision surgery or RT.

With surgery just beware of potential side effects like ED and urinary issues but obviously not everyone has them.

59 is a young age to have ED issues so I suggest u do much research online to help u decide.

Your PSA is not high, depending on tumour size and location was active surveillance not suggested?

  • There are some brilliant friends on this site who will no doubt also explain the benefits of HT / RT / Brachytherapy. As you’ve caught it early and you’re relatively young, these targeted treatments will also be highly effective- and possibly with less risk of serious side effects.

  • My former line manager was diagnosed with prostate cancer at a similar age - I believe his PC was regarded as aggressive. He had surgery, RT and HT and eventually returned to work. He is now enjoying retirement! Hope this short message shows that treatment can work.

    All the best

  • Hi Grundo,

its localised. 6 out of 14 samples came back with cancer on the right side of my prostate. The largest being 12mm. AS was not suggested.

  • Ok, if 12mm then AS poss not right,, mine was 13mm when I started treatment.

Just look on line at side effects to help u with  a decision.

    Any other questions please ask

I had RT by the way, was going for surgery but changed my mind

    best of luck

  • Hi Razor

my husband is scheduled for PR on 6th September, we are lucky because we live in Spain, the timeline from diagnosis and operation will be 7 weeks.  He is 72, has a PSA reading of 4.1 and a Gleason score 3+4, they also found cells on the right side of his prostrate.  I know he’s older than you but he just wants it done and dusted.  I’ve learnt so much on this forum especially what to expect immediately afterwards and long term.   He doesn’t want to read any comments and I only tell him the positives.  You’ll read here all the nitty gritty stuff about ED, you’re young and I think with time you’ll be fine.  Stay away from Google!

just keep reading, it’s early days for you and you will have a lightbulb moment and reach a decision that’s right for you.

    Good luck Razor
