Advanced PC recently diagnosed

Hello,

My OH has recently been diagnosed with advanced PC. A bone scan shows it's spread to 4 areas of bone and a chest xray shows spots on his lungs. We've been told no need for a biopsy as his PSA level was 3801 (they aren't retesting till October). They started him on HT the same day. He's had a CT scan and an appointment with oncologist in three weeks so will get the results then and see what other treatment may be offered.

If anyone on here has had a similar diagnosis I would really like to here about your journey as the subject is taboo here and I'm worried sick.

  • Hello Breakthru, I’m sorry to hear about the diagnosis and can so identify with your worries. My husband was diagnosed last autumn and fortunately there was no sign of secondaries although the cancer was locally advanced. I was worried sick too! My husband refused to talk about it - not just with me but with everybody - including the medical professionals we were encountering. I felt so shut out and alone ! It was a horrible time. We have moved on now since he finished the radiotherapy in March but he is still on the hormone therapy. The radiotherapy was tiring but the side effects were minimal. The hormone therapy has had a horrible affect on him - he aged 10 years in the first 3 months! It’s like being married to someone in a permanent state of jet lag! Still - he’s still here and we plod on in the hope that the drs will decide to end the ht sooner rather than later. I hope you soon have a treatment plan and feel that you are moving forward. For us, there was a sense of relief when we finally knew the full facts and the way forward.

    good luck!

  • Hello Breakthru, Welcome to the club, so sorry to see you here but it's the place to be for advice and help.

I understand your OH's reaction to the diagnosis - it's common with us mere men - why me? why now?  He won't be aware of it yet but he will need your support!! It's a difficult time for you both.

I am sure you are aware, with the information you have give us:

    * The start on Hormone Treatment is to stop his testosterone - this is the "food" for the cancer and once he stops producing testosterone (very soon after the HT starts) the cancer will stop growing.

    * With a high PSA level and spread I would think the oncologist will offer Chemo followed by Radiotherapy, Don't forget I am not a medic - just a bloke living with PC.

There are some members of "the club" on here with a diagnosis like your OH's and I am sure they will be along to offer advice in due course.

Feel free to ask and post on here whenever you want - we will be here for you both on this journey.

    Good luck

    Brian.
