We have just been diagnosed with High Grade Prostate with a Gleason score of 8.

we have been offered radiation and hormones or surgery.

My husband is 64 - we are numb and don’t know how we are going to make a decision. We are seeing the radiation team on the 10th August

  • Hello AnnemarieH.

Sorry to hear of your husband's diagnosis.

I had a Gleason score of 5+4=9 and although my initial reaction was to have surgery, I was advised to have hormone therapy and radiotherapy because of other underlying conditions.

My advice would be to look at all the pros and cons of the treatments offered and make a decision that best suits your husband. Everyone is different and the effects of the treatment affects everyone differently too..

If you could post his PSA and MRI results we, in this community will be able to offer you better advice and support, there are many people here who have helped me.

You can read my journey by clicking on the picture of my cat.

I wish you and your husband well on your journey.

    Kind regards

    Peter

  • Hi Anne

Sorry to hear about your OH.

It is always a shock when u first find out but things do generally get better especially when a treatment plan in place.

If you have any more stats that would help,  ie  PSA figures over the past few months, what does the MRI scan actually show, is tumour confined to within the gland?

    best wishes

    Steve

  • we don’t have any MRInresults . His PSA was 605.

His gleesom score was I think 4+4

  • So his PSA not particularly high , Gleeson score shows medium aggressiveness.

Would be worth finding out  what the MRi report says or the staging 1 -4.    If stage 1 or 2 then contained within the gland

If you contact the centre they should give u that info

    Steve

  • So if I ring the hospital will they give this to us.- thanks

  • they certainly should do. they should have informed you when u were last at the cancer centre/hospital. unless a telephone conversation then could have got missed

    Steve

  • Hi Anne. I had a Gleason Score of 9 and opted for surgery. I know I didn't know which way to turn or what to decide when I was first diagnosed. Most of us probably feel like that at first but we all make a decision. It is not easy. Suggest you look at posts on this site and ask as many questions as you wish. Also suggest you look at Prostate Cancer UK website. They have some great publications for download or you can request paper copies. Click on the menu on the top LH side, then 'Prostate Information and Support' and then 'Our Publications'. There are also other links with sound information on the website.

  • Hi AnnemarieH

A bit late to the party here - but I agree 1110% with outdoor walker (Peter) the first post You are between a rock and a hard place and we do need a bit more information to give an opinion.

I am another member of the "Gleason 9" club and 19 months down the line I feel amazing. Like Peter you can also read my story by clicking on the icon of the beach.

Happy to answer any questions  and I am aware that the diagnosis is a shock - read on here peoples journeys and ask questions - that's the best way to make an informed choice.

    Kind Regards

    Brian.

  • We have. Is for a read out from the hospital and it says gleesom grade group 4.

    Radiolgy T2a, NO, MO

I think this is the biopsy details

    a) left target mid PZ - prostatic adenocarcinoma

    b) left random  PZ benign prostatic gland

c ) right random PZ benign prostatic gland & stroma

organ confirmed and no evidence of nodal metastases.

Surgery would be  left wide excision with a pelvic lymph node dissection .

    does this make sense
