Hi all im new to this group had bladder cancer diagnosis sept 2022 and long term catheter for the last 12 months. had biopsies which have now shown cancer is also in prostate so had MRI scan last week and waiting for results and decision on next treatment.

I am 54 and currently unable to work due to amount of pain i am constantly in, biopsies have taken 13 weeks to get results back even on 2 week fast track so not sure how long i will have to wait for MRI results also had PSA test last week so waiting for those too.

Its starting to really get me down and i find it difficult to be able to discuss with family and friends.

  • Hello Purple 21 - Welcome to our community.

First of all let me say there's no need to feel down. Prostate cancer is a slow growing cancer and you have already started on the path to recovery, Prostate cancer is a journey, always waiting on results, appointments and tests but once you get a full diagnosis the treatment path opens up and things settle down.

To enable us to guide you further and to answer questions, when you get them, please let us have your Gleason Score, PSA results etc. These will tell you where you are and what needs to be done.

On a personal note - i can sympathise with you on the catheter - I had one for over 10 months - and it's a pain to say the least. To give you an idea of how I came to be here if you click on the icon of the beach you can follow my journey.

Try not to feel down, we and I speak for everyone here on the community welcome you.. You are most welcome to discuss anything you want - Prostate cancer related or whatever - we are here for you.

Keep us posted as to your progress.

    Kind regards

    Brian.

  • Hello Purple21

I’m sorry to hear of your problems. The ‘not knowing’ is the hardest this darned cancer journey we are all on.

can I suggest that you contact your urology department to chase up the results? We learned very quickly that you have be ‘politely assertive’ (aka pushy) to move things along when dealing with the NHS. If you get no success, I would suggest making a formal complaint. - perhaps by using your hospital PALS ( sometimes called PILS) service. It might be worth reminding them that the Government set target is 62 days from first referral to initiation of first treatment for all cancer patients?

if you’re feeling down then this is the place to be! There are some lovely people who post here and they kept me going through some very dark times!

    good luck

  • Hi

Not great news for you, with us if it’s not one thing then it’s another, now with all these strikes things are backed up no end. I can imagine how you feel, with me, I told all my relatives straight away, now my wife who’s my carer, let’s everyone know about any appointments, how I am, etc, I do talk to I always get a reply from my younger sister, then others follow, so if you back away now it will get harder easier to talk now, then if questions arise you have a clear mind how to reply.

    Stay safe

    Joe

  • Hi mate, I’m also 54. Had my prostate taken out 6 weeks ago. Not had your added complication with the bladder, but I’m ok so far.

Yes, I think we all have some side effects. I’m dry mostly, other than after several bees! ED an issue but early days.

Just guess I’d like to say we can get through this.

Keep the faith and keep smiling…

  • Also, personally I think the more we chat about it (and lose any stigma) the better.

we need to spread the word…

  • Hi tempest I had my prostate removed 9 weeks ago and I still get a bit of urine leakage when I move around stretch and sneeze etc not lots but enough to still need pads are you pad free ? As for ED I have got the vacuum pump this certainly helps waking the old boy up I have also tried sildenfil but done nothing so now got tadalafil too try

  • I feel a tad embarrassed asking a complete stranger this question, but here go.

My husband had surgery 6 weeks ago and he's worried about even trying to get an erection because of the incontinence. I've suggested that he asks for a pump, but I reckon that I may have to bring the subject up (no pun intended) when I accompany him to his post op follow up.

If it's not too personal a question did you find leakage a problem when you were pumped up.

  • Hi GR1

i don’t get any leakage when using the vacuum pump tell him it’s nothing to be embarrassed about I am sure most of us after surgery suffer with ED

  • A pump ring is a good idea, especially if blue pills aren't helping.  However,  what they call a cock ring is v good at keeping an erection if achieved as stops blood from seeping back. Hope that helps.

  • Sorry meant pump, not pump ring.
