  1. Hi, my husband is due to have his prostate removed next week. Any hints on the right things to do or say to help or is there a section for wives of men having or had prostatectomy.? Thanks
  • Hi Nessynoodle, welcome to the forum.  The best thing to do is just be there for your husband.

There are lots of good strong wives in this forum.  They help us men to understand our wives and partners more.

Best of luck for you and your husband on your journey.  Keep us all up to date with his progress.

  • All ok. No nerves damaged. Phew. Going to be moved to ward off of recovery room as no beds in his ward ( sure they told him at pre op he had a bed booked! ). Spoke to him. Very groggy and said was in so much pain. Said ibuprofen and paracetamol through a drip. Doesnt seem strong enough but he was confused. Will sort it at 6 when can visit. Thanks for asking. Ness

  • NessyN, Glad everything went ok.  It doesn't sound like ibuprofen and Paracetamol are strong enough.  I can imagine the pain.

  • Hi hubby's prostatectomy went well but has been discharged with no info on recovery really. He has been told to take laxatives sachets and tablets but when he does go it pours away so not sure if should still be taking laxatives. Has anyone else had this experience or got any advice. Ness

  • In our experience the aftercare/advice from the Hospital was nil. Very poor.
Do use the laxative as necessary, important not to strain or get constipated.  If loose then omit a dose.  Hi fibre diet and plenty of water helps.
Keep moving as much as possible too.
Use pain relief regularly at first, even if you don’t think it’s needed.  If he gets stabbing type of pains in the tummy it’s likely to be bladder spasms which you should have been given meds for.  These pains can coincide with catheter leakage.  Hot water bottle or heat pad also helps.
Keep a check on the catheter, inspect for sediment which can cause blockage.  Call the treating team straight away if this happens.
We are two weeks post op, strength is gradually returning, it’s a slow but steady process so try and be patient (not easy)!

wish you all the best.  This forum has been great for information and I thank everyone of you.  Sara

  • Hi Sara. Thanks for the info. I ended up ringing the nurse yesterday for advice. Was told to cut out his laxative sachets and for now just stick to the 2 laxative tablets at night. Also as he said to the nurse that he wasnt in mega pain now more discomfort so she said to stop his tramadol after today and just use paracetamol. If this is a little painful still then take just one tramadol a day. He has just had his catheter out so another push forward in his recovery.. i hope your hubby continues to make good progress! Yes thanks everyone for your advice! Ness
