I had a raised PSA test result (9.28) back after a health checkup in mid-Jan. Got referred to the 2 Week Wait and spoke with a Consultant Urologist within 10 days. Had another PSA test (11) followed by an MRI scan. This showed lesions on both sides of my prostate, so next thing I'm having a trans perineal biopsy (ouch). Had the results of the biopsy last week , which confirmed cancer in a number of the cores. Gleason score was 7 (3+4) but within a whisker of being (4+3) . Didn't get any other numbers but apparently still localised. Doctor suggested two treatments , HT for 6 months then daily RT for 4 or 6 weeks ; or a radical prostatectomy. Opted for the latter as this seems more likely to produce a cure from the off. Saw the surgeon at the weekend and now waiting for the surgery date. Op waiting list is about 6 weeks. I'm told. In the last 9 weeks or so , I've gone from "seem to be peeing a lot Doc" to incrementally moving closer to having cancer every few days. The anxiety and stress of waiting for and passing each stage has been challenging , particularly for my wife. I don't feel I'm any different to the person I was at the turn of the year but then I look in the mirror. On a positive note preparing for the operation has given added emphasis to my aspiration this year to lose some weight and regain some degree of fitness, after a couple of years of post covid inactivity.
Hi Sogrum. Yes anxiety, stress, sadness, fear, surprise, relief, you name it, you will experience it during your journey. Same goes for those supporting us. Really positive that you have been diagnosed and you are now in the sausage machine waiting to be processed. I had a radical prostatectomy last September after a wait from diagnosis in July, due to my holiday and then the Consultant's holiday. I was (and still am) overweight at 103 kg obese. My Consultant expressed his concern about my weight in July describing how surgery is more difficult going through fat. Well that freightened me to a certain extent and I thought this is something I can try to do something about. I went on quite a mad diet limiting vastly calories, carbs and fat (not much else left in food) having tried all the various official diets in the past where only one of those gets tackled. I went down to 90 kg in those two months. The Consultant expressed that he was very pleased. Cut out caffine and alcohol one week before the op and am still keeping those at a very low limit, although I had considerably reduced intake since september. Started to eat sensibly immediately after the op but cutting out cakes, biscuits and greediness and have been hovering around 85 kg for some months. Losing weight gave me something to focus on and also a lot of self pride. I would suggest you try to shed some weight if you have too much and tackle fitness if you are able before your op. You will probably find you will want to up exercise after the op and a lot on this forum start to walk a lot. I have found the countryside looks different since July. Best of luck with your op.
Sogrum, 22 months ago I was diagnosed with PC Gleason (3+4) 7, T2 Intermediate Risk. My biopsies came back as 9/29 positive. I wasn't suitable for surgery because of other issues, so I opted for hormones and Radiatiotherapy. The month of Radiotherapy ended at the start of November '21.
All in all, I don't regret it as I am now 13 months into Remission. Clear of the Hormones now, just the E.D. lingering on. Not the end of the world is it?
Counselling and this forum really helped me a lot.
Hope your op goes well.
