First appointment after prostatectomy

My husband’s first appointment after his prostatectomy is this Wednesday and I’m really starting to panic, I am staying strong in front of him as he’s done so well and I have been positive up to now but as time ticks on, I’m becoming more anxious.
My husband had 2 tumours, one Gleason 6 and one Gleason 3+4 so I know that’s favourable, he also had PSA OF 10 which crept up from 6 in a year.
The surgeon said he thought the cancer seemed to be confined to the prostate on removal but without the pathology you just don’t know.
Can anyone tell me the news they received at this first appointment and what was done next?

Thanks so much and good luck to you all

Clare

  • Thank you so much, I have just read through your details and I’m glad I did, not only because you do have similar numbers to my husband but also because I didn’t know there could be a fluctuation in PSA levels after surgery! I’m glad your PSA came back down again.

It’s very helpful seeing the updates. Thank you.

I hope we have similar news tomorrow.

    Thank you again

  • It’s the way I have a tendency to play golf!!

  • Hi Clare,

I think you will have had the meeting by the time you read this, and I hope the news is good.

My experience was that the consultant was very realistic, and said that the cancer was widespread in the prostate, but apart from one small area was contained within the prostate. For me, it’s a worry that one small area had this positive margin but my consultant is hopeful that the cancer had not spread. Time will tell, and on the positive side there are treatments available if my psa rises. For now, no further treatment is required.
At the time of the 6 week check my psa was less than 0.05, and I have my next check at the beginning of February.
My recovery from surgery has been good and I hope your husband is making good progress too.

I would say, whatever the outcome, remain positive. Solutions are possible and your husband is on the road to recovery.

  • Seems like mine was pretty much the same as your husbands. 3+3 and 3+4, PSA 6.7. After removal, doc told me there was more cancer than expected to find (good job we got it out), but it was contained and pathology was clear. My next appointment and PSA is in 5 months time (I am 8 weeks post). I doubt some level of anticipation around the PSA tests will go a way. I have two friends that had the same procedure, thorough the same centre, one is 8 years post and the other 10 years doing OK, carrying on with life. This has always kept me going throughout. Now just to get and do the things I want to do, many places to see and things to do.
