Hi, My husband was diagnosed this summer with aggressive prostate cancer which may have spread to his spine. This is not definitive as consultant wanted to do another scan, My husband has decided that he does not want to go through hormone/radiation treatment and has informed the hospital of this decision. He did not have a further scan to confirm/dismiss bone cancer I Have accepted his decision and i am here to support in any way i can. HOWEVER, he does not want anyone to know of his diagnosis and has made me promise not to let anyone know - I understand his reasons, but i need to offload and i need to know who/where i can turn to when his health deteriorates and ensure that he gets any pain meds help that he needs when the time comes. Has anyone else been in this position and could possibly signpost me to the people/services that i can approach? At the moment i am coping (I know i am not the one with the diagnosis) I also know that i will need help to enable him to have the best possible outcome. Thank you for listening to my ramble, Actually feels good "telling someone"

  • That's a tough call not telling anyone. If you can do so I would recommend macmillian nurses as the provide a service to the whole family. I have stage 4 mets to bones prostate cancer and without the treatment ie hormone therapy etc I may not be here today. Maybe try convince macmillan is a good option, they can help with meds pain and so on.

  • Maggie’s are good too, apparently.

  • Aggie,. My local Maggie's in Newcastle have a good monthly Prostate Cancer Support Group.  Your nearest Maggie's might have the same.

It's so good, all being in the same boat, swapping experiences, makes coping a lot easier.

Even if you and your husband go in together, they will try to help you both.

I found it really hard to open up at first, last year (I used to keep everything bottled up inside), but now I can open up to anyone.

Keeping a sense of humour really helps.

There are quite a few wives and partners in the forum (for their husbands).

I have gone from not knowing anyone else with Cancer to not knowing many people without.

Keep in touch with us all.

  • Hi and welcome to the forum. If you need to talk to someone you can phone the Macmillan nurses or the Prostate Cancer UK nurses. Both are wonderful and you can find the contact numbers and hours on the websites. As others have said Maggie's is also really goo and you can either phone or visit in person.

    I hope that helps.
