Hi. My husband is having treatment for aggressive prostate cancer. The effects of the hormone treatment are terrible. It is really hard watching him in such constant pain and feeling ill. He has had radiotherapy and one year of hormone treatment with two more years to go - it seems endless! I would love to hear from other people about the pain management they have. The hormone injections are quite an unusual kind apparently and really have nasty side effects.
Hi Sarah and Gilly,
I had 1 year of Hormones and 20 fractions of VMAT Radiation treatment.
The Hormone treatment started June 2021, hot flushes and mood swings straight away. The fatigue built up with the Radiotherapy. At the end of my month of Radiation treatment all I could do was shuffle, no strength at all.
When this wore off I thought I was over it. Apparently not. The Hormone treatment has stripped me of my stamina. Even if I try to do a little bit gardening, nothing too taxing, I have to go and lie down for an hour or so.
I don't regret getting the Radiation and Hormone treatments. 11 and a half months after my Radiation treatment I am now in Remission. That makes it all worthwhile.
Still have quite a few months to get the Hormones out of my system. (I was Gleason 3+4 Intermediate Risk).
Hope both of your husband's get sorted soon. Be strong for them.
I took my partner to all of my consults, I knew that I wouldn't ask the pertinent questions.

Hi Gilly
ypu really are at the beginning of the journey. If I can help please let me know. I actually don’t know his Gleason score. I must ask him. He has “very aggressive prostate cancer”. He had 37 treatments of radiotherapy all through Xmas and new year and 3 years of hormone injection. Let me know what they decide about your husband. I will keep my fingers crossed for you.
Hi Steve
thsnk you for replying. The hormones are the pits aren’t they. My husband has lost all his body hair and has appalling hot flushes. Part of me thinks that at least now he knows what it has been like for the last ten years for me!
my husband has fought so hard not to give up and has carried on going to the personal trainer twice a week even through his radiotherapy. He also feels exhausted and has a rest every afternoon but fights it the rest of the time. It is very hard and I am so pleased that you are coming out on the other side now. Good luck
Thanks Sarah,
All us men on the Hormones will never say anything about Hot Flushes, I don't know how you can cope with the Hot Flushes for years.
If I had a hat, I would take it off to you! (Sounds a bit strange).
Keeping my sense of humour kept me going through the bad days. I have kept a 'Thought Diary' since the day I was diagnosed. My partner suggested that. I thought "What would I write?"
Now I am into my 7th diary. Every day I go back to the same day last year to see how I was feeling.
Sometimes I laugh, sometimes I cry. This time last year I was into my 2nd week of Radiation treatment. Interesting reading, I'm glad I kept filling it in.
And I can waffle on and on and on...

Hello to you both.
I had actually shied away from reading on this website as I get so anxious about my husband’s situation but someone suggested I looked on the Macmillan website for some support.
I felt sorry to see you had no replies Sarah…..hence my linking with you.
My husband had his prostate removed 2018 but a year later had to have radiotherapy as psa was rising again.
Initially this seemed successful but he’s now back at oncology ( from urology) as psa now 3.5.
Oncology are suggesting it’s too early to start any further treatment ( which would be hormonal) but he’s having regular ct and bone scans. Ct was last week and bone scan this coming Thursday.
I can’t help but feel we’re just sitting here waiting for the cells to increase and increase.
I’m sorry Sarah, I now realise I’ve jumped into your posting. It was the mention of “hormones” that I noticed.
Hi Sarah,
What hormone injection is your husband having? Mine was initially on Degarelix (Firmagon) but was in so much localised pain around the injection site for about three weeks before the next one. I made some enquiries and he is now on Prostap with only three monthly jabs and is only in a bit of discomfort for a day.
The normal side effects of having hormone injections, I think, are the same with all of this type of treatment. The most common seem to be hot flushes, mood swings and a more than healthy interest in dresses (joke!). Other than that, he is lucky and is not in pain now.
Hope this helps.
Gina
Gina, I thought it was mandatory to wear dresses when on the Hormones?
Hope you and Richard are both well.
I had my 4th Covid jab yesterday. The nurse said "it's only a little prick". How did she know!
Had 3 hours sleep last night, I'm like a bear with a sore head.
