Is there a link between prostate cancer and back ache?

My husband was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer about 8 months ago. He has regular hormone injections and is also taking Enzulutamide. He has been doing well so far, until his psa level went up from 0.5 to 1.7. The consultant seemed concerned which worried him. Now his back ache has returned (he had it just before his diagnosis). Is there a link, has anyone else experienced this? I would be grateful for any advice. He’s struggling at the moment.

  • hi Janeb,

My husband is also advanced PC. Some men are diagnosed because they go to the dr with back pain. I also know that my husband has little flair ups with the back pain but he has a very rare type of PC and it worries me too.

my advice is to get everything that is concerning you checked out. All pain can be managed and the cause treated. Some men on here have had radiotherapy to treat the pain successfully.

    sending you much love,

  • Thanks Louli, it’s hard sometimes to keep my husband’s spirits up, understandably. Every little twinge makes him think the cancer has spread. How do you cope with the situation? It seems so scary sometimes

  • Hi JaneB

Back pain can be related to prostate cancer, but not always.

I was suffering from quite a bit of lower back pain but I was very active at the time playing tennis and doing lots of gardening. I was self referred to an NHS physio but it didn't help one jot. My GP didn't suggest a PSA test so quite a lot of time was lost in my diagnosis.

However, since being diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer, I have suffered a lot more with lower back pain but I have learned to manage it by taking regular pain killers. Pain killers play a very important part in managing advanced prostate cancer, so don't just grin and bear it! There is lots of help out there so just keep on asking for help.

    Good luck...

  • There is definitely a link there. I've stage 4 with bone mets to pelvic area. Although my back is fine oncology suggest sore feet is a result of the bone spread so its indirect to the feet. I'm going through scans etc to hopefully find out though.
