My husband has advanced prostate cancer and has been on hormone therapy for the past 6 months. His PSA level reduced dramatically,  but it has just gone up from 0.3 to 1.7. He is really upset by this news, is this normal? Can anything like diet or blood pressure affect the levels?

  • Hi Jane,

    Welcome to the club.
PSA is a strange old thing, you can have a test in the morning and then in the afternoon and get 2 different results. Extreme exercise up to 48 hours before the test will affect the test.
What did the oncologist say? I recently spoke to my oncologist and she said that as long as it remains under 2 she was not to worried.
I always try to get mine blood tests done on the same time and day (Thursday 11.15). Whether this helps who knows.

I hope this helps, to put your mind at ease give your CNS or oncologist a call.

  • Thanks for your reply Tyler,it was really helpful. Did you mean that strenuous exercise affects the results in a bad way? He has been doing a lot of cutting down trees and other quite physical tasks. I think he’s been overdoing it a bit. He is going to hopefully speak to the specialist oncology nurse tomorrow. They are always really helpful. I think it was the consultant that upset him. She seemed so negative. Fingers crossed that it’s just a blip.

  • Hi Jane

Simple things like urine infections can interfere with psa levels so don't get to hung up on them when they're really low.

It's quite normal for psa levels to have very small rises when on a treatment for a while. Cancer cells can adapt to make the treatment less effective to the stage where another treatment is introduced alongside to bring back under control.

There are plenty treatment options out there to help your husband live a normal life for quite sometime......I'm not to far away from 10th anniversary from my journey starting.

Wishing you & your husband well
