Prostate diagnosis

Hello, my husband was diagnosed last week with Prostate cancer. He had a PSA of 8.4 followed by an MRI and a biopsy.

At his consultation of his results last week he has been advised to have a prostatectomy with the need for urgency. His appointment with his surgeon is in 3 weeks time with a probable operation not until September. We both feel this seems a long time to wait when the emphasis from the results was not to delay.

I wondered if you could comment and/or reassure that this is quite normal in timing for such an operation, and that no detrimental spread of cancer will occur due to the number of weeks we will be waiting before surgery takes place.

Thank you so much.

  • Hi Jewel

sorry to hear the sad news. I hope what you read next will give you peace of mind. My PSA was 27 on the 3rd March. My Gleason score was 5+4=9 which is a very aggressive cancer. I had a robotic assisted prostate removal on the 20th June and now in recovery. It is very worrying times for you both. I take it you’re still waiting on your results from your biopsy? This will tell you how aggressive it is and how fast you need to move towards surgery. Hope this helps, stay positive (which is hard)

  • Hi JM

Probably with current stress on the NHS September is not too bad. But I wonder if things are really that urgent, PSA of  8.4 not particularly high. You say that you have already had a meeting to discuss results. A Gleeson score and MRI report would be useful and could help with advice given on here. Don't forget a lot of PC's are slow growing so unless really aggressive, (Gleeson will tell u this)  time should be on his side

    Best wishes

  • Thanks for your reply Steve, that's very helpful.

My husbands Gleeson score is 3+4 =7

    stage T2 c N0

Hope that helps in any advise moving forward on what you and others feel regarding the urgency for his operation.

  • Hi

It seems the team has everything under control, I’m more than certain that if it was required sooner they would push for it to be done.

Getting surgery at the moment as you may have seen on the tv, can take many months September is not far away, and will fly by, just keep positive.

    Stay safe

  • So that looks promising, low PSA, lowish Gleeson T2c N0 , looks like contained within the gland, non aggressive, potentially curable

    good luck

  • Hi

i was diagnosed last January, my operation was in April (4 months) PSA score 5.9 with a Gleason of 3+4. The surgeon said at one time they did 2 operations per day when I was operated on they were doing 2 per week due to COVID.
Initial diagnosis was T2 contained. The biopsy of the removed parts found I had T3B. It had escaped. I do not think this is anything to do with the delays in treatment it is just the inaccuracies of diagnosis however the earlier the operation the earlier you will know the full picture.
