Prostate cancer

Hello all.

It seems I have prostate cancer. I am 68, Caucasian male. I am based in Tokyo, Japan. I am not fluent in Japanese, but I have lived here nearly 30 years, so I have some ability in the language, but, nonetheless, I've had to seek out English-speaking doctors, which is harder than it may seem.

I am at the beginning stages of determining what action should be taken.

I had a prostate biopsy, which revealed 5 of 22 cores indicating prostate cancer. My urologist was quite calm about it. (Of course, it's not his body.) He understood my concern but said I need not panic.

I am having a bone scan tomorrow. It seems that bone scans are not painful and if there are side effects, I do not know what they are.

I am hoping to connect with others who might be on this journey, to help, support, share information, etc.

I am sure I am going to have many questions and will rely on members of this community who may have dealt with much more than I have to date.

I could go on, but perhaps this is enough for a start. Thank you.

  • Hi Tatami53, Bone scans are useually proceded by an injection first and that's the most painful part and no worse than any other injection . Then a wait of a couple of hours for the injection to take effect and the scan is like an  x ray while you lay down for 20 mins. There are no side effects but as the injection is radio active you are addvised to keep away from children and pregnant women for a short time (24 hours) following until it has left your system.

I hope it goes really well for you and comes up clear.

    kind regards Reg

  • Thank you; I really appreciate that.

  • Sir, I wonder if you would be willing to discuss your radiation treatments with me? It has been proposed as a possible course of action, or a surgery for complete removal.

I've been wary of the radiation because of possible severe side effects. But it seems, from what I read on your main page, that you didn't mention any of those? If you care to discuss this, I'd be appreciative, but on the other hand, you may not want to relive any of that.

I hope you are well. Thank you.

  • Hi Tatami53

Yes it is slow growing, the medication has slowed me down, as I take other meds to for assorted ailments. Dealing with it is a on and off thing, you have bad and a few good days, as it goes on, you get more tired?

Testosterone is what the cancer feeds on, so sex is by your own desire, if you want to go down that route, I would ask McMillan nurses, who know far more about this than me.

Urination depends on the individual, we are all different, some have no problem, others have trouble, if you have a problem you need to tell your specialist nurse.

    stay safe

  • Tatami 53. Yes i'm well thanks enjoying the sunny afternoon. I had radio therapy in 2019 and finished in March of that year after 20 sessions. Side effects can hit different people in different ways and I was fairly lucky with few problems duruing and after finishing. I had a couple of bouts of wind follwed by passing some clear gel like fluid and some slight rectal bleeding and that occurred again (the bleeding) in March this year but all that could be found was some evidense of slight bowel damage from the RT. The worst part of RT is having to have a full bladder before treatment but the treatment itself is totaly painless and is ljust a 10min lie down. I'm no doctor but removal of the prostate and RT can both have side effects and so I took took my Oncologists advice on what he thought was the best treatment for me. But you are on the right site for advice from from people that have experienced both options.

Stay safe and keep well. Kind regards Reg
