Prostrate Cancer Metastasis

Hi

My 66 year old husband had been treated for sciatica for the past 8 months, incorrectly diagnosed by a GP.  After he was able to see a different NHS GP from the same practice, he had a blood test, urine test, and xray done.  The blood tests results showed he was very anaemic, with possible Prostrate Cancer.  This was confirmed by the xray.  He saw a urologist just before the easter weekend who said that his PSA was the highest that the urologist had seen in that hospital.  The urologist confirmed that the prostrate cancer has metastasised (we assume into his bones). He was prescribed immediate hormonal therapy which he started last week.  He has severe pain in his pelvis, his lower back, his groin, and down both his legs.  The intensity varies from his left to his right side.  We are still waiting for the urologist to send an urgent referral for him to have a bone scan with a view to assessing possible treatment options thereafter.  This is all taking time, on the NHS.  We have not been told his PSA level.  We have not been given a prognosis.

My husband can't walk for long, and when he does he uses a walking stick as an aid;  he finds going up and down stairs very difficult due to the pain.

Can somebody please advise - My husband and I have been living apart (separated) for just over two years.  His job provides him with accommodation, as does mine (in a different county).  I am still working.  If my husband resigns from his job (which I think he will have to as he is unable to physically do the physical work it entails), and he moves into my spare room so I can care for him as much as I can after work, would he be able to claim pension credit benefit  (bearing in mind we are still legally married and I am working); I have today applied for Attendance Allowance benefit.  We would not be able to survive on my wage and attendance allowance alone.  How do I apply for a carer to visit him during the day to help him whilst I am at work?

I would be most grateful for advice please.

Thank you.

  • God so sorry for your shock. All I can say my young husband suddenly diagnosed prostate can is ill like yours. • (it is called PIP Payment)

  • Hello Kerry. As your husband is 66 years old he will not be eligible for Personal Independance Payment (cut off is 65).

I see you have applied for Attendance Allowance and there a 2 levels, depends on what assistance is needed during day and night. Lower rate is £61.85 per week and higher rate is £92.40 per week.

Pension credit 'tops up' pensioners on a low income to a minimum amount.

As for carers you will be entitled to a carer's assessment via the local authority to determine what assistance is needed.

As Mrs. needs help has indicated your best bet is to contact Macmillan help line and they will guide you through things.

    Best wishes, Graham.

  • Ow sorry lol. Didn't realise pip had age limit. So sorry, thanks for correcting that for me Graham. Xxx yes my Keith is only 58. Hasn't worked in months so so greatfull for that money x

  • It's a bit like Carers Allowance Mrs. needs help. That stops for the carer when they reach pension age although the caring doesn't stop.

  • I will claim, or try to claim careres allowance soon. My money is very low, but over the think £130 limit. But soon won't be working so will hopefully get it to help. Had worring time lately with Keith but I know noway I'm the only one. Sorry does anyone know. Confused. Ginna have STAMPEDE lympth node and prostate radatherpy. But letter says 'there's no evidence to extent life' . And says 'potential toxicities'???? Any ideas what that means anyone? Xx

  • Sorry to hear your unpleasant news, we are all here for you if you want to let off steam, ask questions or just to chat

great people in this community. I have taken this snip from the PIP claim area

You can get Personal Independence Payment (PIP) if all of the following apply to you:

You must also be under State Pension age if you’ve not received PIP before.

A little bit more information for you Cancer is classed as a disability, so if later after the treatment has started he will not have to give up work his employer must by law make reasonable adjustments to allow him to return

Also if you drive you can get a blue badge and if you get the higher rate for mobility on your PIP claim you can claim road TAX for the vehicle he uses

There is lots of help out there if you ask

Hope this helps Take care remember we are all in this together

    Chris

  • Evening.

Can anyone assist with travel health insurance.

They need to rewrite the Questions well out of date. Soon as you mention Terminal cancer on a travel site automatically stops you carrying on and ask you to call the company and they put you into a Broker to find insurance..

Please explain between ",,, terminal cancer and ", not curable but Treatable I'm confused.

  • Try insurancewith there's a blog  on chat under the heading travel insurance.

  • If you get standard rate mobility PIP the DVLA have a postal process that lets youi claim 50% of your car tax back each year.  This does not count as Tax Exempt so in many Pay and Display car parks you still have to pay to park.

If you get the enhanced rate mobility PIP, the DVLA have an online service to claim !00% of your car tax back and you'll be Tax Exempt and not have to pay charges in nearly all pay and display car parks. You'll also be able to get a car under the Motability Car scheme, in lieu of your enhanced Mobility PIP.
