Hello , Received a diagnosis for prostate cancer in November 2021. So far the cancer is localised and following consultations with professionals have opted for surgery. I try to live as normal a life as I can, but also conscious that I have to face the fact that I am dealing with prostate cancer. Thoughts about treatment and side effects of treatment can sometimes become overwhelming and fraught with anxiety. I find that sometimes it is a lonely road being travelled.

  • Hi Eagle

The initial diagnosis is a massive shock. I can still picture mine 2.5 years down the line.  Don't feel you are on your own as there are others here who can help with questions that should help ease your mind.

    Regards

    Trying to get fit again!
  • Hi Stuart,

Thank you for your response. It is helpful to know that the initial feelings of unexpected and overwhelming sense of helplessness is real but with support from others living through this I can begin the process of dealing with stuff.

  • Eagle 1,

As Stuart said, The initial diagnosis is a massive shock.  How true that is.

I know that it took me a month or two to accept the diagnosis.  Whenever I had some time to myself I would cry to myself.  I went through the "Why Me" phase.

Reading all of the information from the hospital about side effects sent my brain into overdrive.  It was all "What if this happens...,  What if that happens..."

Finding the Macmillan Prostate Cancer Support Group was one of the best things I did.  All of us sharing the same thing in common, I know, so many different stages, affecting us all in different ways.

One of the best pieces of information I had was not to think past your next appointment, to try to just concentrate on today.

That calmed my mind down a lot.

My local Maggie's Centre in Newcastle is going to start a new course "Living with and beyond Prostate Cancer", a 6 week course dealing with everything that Prostate Cancer can throw at you.  Guest speakers, Oncologists, Life Coaches, Psychologists.  I can't wait for it to start.

Is there a Maggie's Centre near you?  If so, give them a visit.
