Erectile Disfunction

I had my prostate removed on the 14/06/2021 when I was 54, the operation was a complete success my cancer was contained and no signs of any spread. I was not expecting how hard the recovery period was going to be, I had 10 weeks off work and did not feel myself for a number of weeks after that. My surgeon informed me that the operation went well and he managed to spare both nerves, but could not promise anything with regards to ED. Blue pills do not work and the vacuum pump enlarges my penis but it is not hard enough for penetration. Just asking about other peoples experiences and does your erection return?

  • Hi Uguys

I wanted to ensure your received a response here, but this is not something that I am able to share any gifts of knowledge on, so I have had a look around and the Macmillan site and could not find what I was looking for but I did find This on the cancer research site which if you have not read it already may offer you some ideas and encouragement.

    Good Luck

  • Hi Uguys,

Sorry you are having problems with ED, not a subject some men are comfortable talking about. First of all you are not alone, I`m in your club as well. I am on a different treatment plan from you as I am on Hormone Therapy, injections and oral tablets. I have ED and still have it 21 months later so I cannot say if erections return or not, sorry. I am fortunate as my wife is very understanding about the problem and has been my rock since my diagnosis back in March 2020. I have a few years on you as well (67) so maybe it was going to happen anyway lol. I wish you well for the future and that things resolve themselves quickly for you.

    Take care, Tom.

  • Hi

I would like some input about this ED as well . I am just 49 and at present on chemo with RT planned after T4 disease so really not thinking of ED at present but I am sure will be an issue once the disease is a bit under control. I heard pump in combination with pills would be best approach . ? Would like some input from others with same problem please

  • I had the da Vinci five years ago. At the debrief the surgeon said he had opted to spare some of the nerves and as a result 2mm of the tumour remained.

The little blue pills work but I am now able to get an erection of sorts without them. Nothing to write home about mind.

Chin up and the rest will follow.

  • Hi Uguys - my story is similar to yours.  My op was a few days before yours (age 56) but I had been having ED issues for a few years before (perhaps resulting from BPH).  The template biopsy and being on bicalutamide whilst awaiting surgery killed things stone dead.  Sildenafil 100 mg or tadalafil 20 mg don't make the slightest difference.  I use the pump to prevent atrophy but the result is like having a feral balloon animal attached to my groin - I couldn't imagine using it for sex, that's for sure.  I only had partial nerve sparing surgery but I do still feel that there is "life" down there.  It's just going to be a long haul.  I don't fancy caverject, that's for sure.

  • My urologist ( in france ) has given me a prescription for something injectable at my first post op consultation . We haven’t discussed it at all , but it looks as if he’s going to stick it in little Bill . I hope he asks first. Still have 5 weeks to get something big enough to deter him from doing that . Constantly thinking about Debbie Harry at the Glasgow Apollo in 1979 . If that doesn’t do it …… nothing will.
