Hi all,

I’ve been told this week that I have a strong chance of having prostate cancer. I had a CT scan last week for supposed kidney stones but my doctor called me on Monday this week to say I had an enlarged prostate which has probably been causing me issues I’ve been experiencing over the last few months.

He asked me to go for an urgent blood test on Monday and then called me back yesterday (one day later)to say my PSA levels are high for my age (4.6) He’s now referred me for an urgent consultation with a urologist. My maternal grandfather had prostate cancer 30+ years ago and had it removed. However my dad and brothers have had no issues.

I wondered if anyone here has been diagnosed at a similar age and any advice for early days of diagnosis if this is what it is?

  • Hi

There are a few people on here who have been diagnosed at an early age, but all are either very treatable or curable, I’ve had two lots of kidney stones and the pain from them was excruciating unlike PC,
The urologist will have more to say, make sure you write down as many questions as you can think of.

    Stay safe

    Joe

  • Hi Andy, have a look at my profile for information on treatment plans, I've had most except chemotherapy which I will have further down the line. I wish you the best of luck for your scans and I hope for the best news for you. There are alot of treatments available even for people like me who have aggressive and incurable advanced prostate cancer so there is hope and I hope reading my profile gives you that if you get the unwanted news. Good luck and any questions just ask, also if you need a chat just message me

    Regards

    Paul

  • PSA is a fairly unreliable test, and certainly does not confirm the diagnosis - they'll do a biopsy for that, but the PSA combined with symptoms certainly doesn't rule it out.

You'll have a number of tests in the weeks to come, and if it is prostate cancer they'll need to find out what stage it's at, to know your treatment options. They'll also determine a Gleason score, which is a guide to how aggressive the tumour is (if there is one!).

If you do get a diagnosis, feel free to return here to talk about what that might mean for you, and also tell your brothers and father and urge them to get a PSA test too.

It's also well worth reading the 'toolkit' for general advice.

If I can't beat this, I'm going for the draw.

Meanwhile, my priority is to live while I have the option.

  • I wouldn't worry too much Andy, PSa of 4.6 not particularly high.

Did anything show on the CT scan other than enlarged prostate?

Probably next step is to have a MRI to identify any possible tumours followed by a biopsy.

Even if it turns out to be cancer, which it may not, then should be easily treatable.

  • Hi Steve,

I really appreciate your response about this and it makes me feel better. Everyone on here has been really helpful and all have said that it should be easily treatable which is positive to hear. Thanks again.

  • Hey Joe, thanks for your response. That’s reassuring and makes me feel more positive!

  • Hey Heinous,

this is really informative, thank you. I hadn’t heard about the Gleason score and I’ve now read a bit more about biopsies etc. I’ll definitely return here with more information/questions when I hear more from the hospital. Thanks
