Hello

My husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer six months ago. He is 53 years old. He had a very high PSA and glees on score of 9. He is on hormone treatment and a hormone study called Proteus. .  He suffers with side effects of mood swings, extreme tiredness. He is very fearful and does not like to take about it but does not seek help. He is due to have his prostate removed in a couple of months and then continue with the treatment.

As a family this has hit us hard. We have two children 12 and 15 who are having their own issues.

I wanted to know if there are any other people on this study? Also the best ways he can reach out for support? Also any support for my children in dealing with his cancer?

Many Thanks

  • So sorry to hear this. It is veryhard and certainly ‘ fearful but not seeking help’ is very familiar to me from my husband’s experience. We benefited from 6 sessions of free counselling from Macmillan which didn’t make the fear go away but at least made it easier to talk. I’m sure the Macmillan support line can tell you more. Also i found the people at Maggie’s very good to talk to when I was feeling desperate and couldn’t talk to my husband - just a half hour phone chat every so often makes a lot of difference. Good luck, and virtual hugs

    Hello Happy

thank you for the guidance and support. I hope your husband, you and your family are doing well.

    Kind Regards

  • Hello

You could ask for McMillan nurses to pay you a visit, there Excellent dealing with these situations, As regards proteus, this is a new trial only been going barely two years,  so not much information about it.
With all medications side effects are common, after time and being positive you learn to live with them, hopefully being so young he’s got many years on his side.

How are you coping with all this ? It affects everyone.

    Stay safe

    Joe

  • I think this is similar to the Apalutamide study. I was offered it but did not have the gene mutation. It is combined with a placebo so you don't know if you're getting it but I'm told the results have been very positive.

I'm 68 yrs now so was about the same age as your husband then. mine has come back so got to fight again.

so what would I say to your husband hmm? Just had a knee replacement in Sept 2021 I been up St Pauls on 22/12/21 to the top and plan on going back to Ben Nives as failed the first time, this time at 70yrs old I'm going to the top. also forgot to retire so still working full time 50hrs wk.

so take the bull by the horns and take the world on, on your terms

  • ps.  the tiredness could be 2 things 1 diabetes and the hormones my friend is going through early stages and suffering as well I found that green tee or decaf tea helps and strangely monster super energy drink probably get shot for that 1 so I won't tell anyone that I have drunk 7000 cans over 12 years  Its what works for him

to finish I was the same as your hubby mt grandchildren are now older and have seen me fight this 1 has Spina Bifida and the other one has a bowl cancer seeing me fight this has given them the fighting spirit.

remember you can't be on top every day so hears my rule

1,  you are allowed to have 15 days in every 100 to have the hump  graham said so ( 1 in 7)

    2. the other 85 days have a good 1

how do you have a good day when you get up in the morning look out the window and see the world because you made it through the night that's a good day because it doesn't matter what the weather does your warm and dry and alive.

    yours Graham
