Hi. New to all this. My dad has had a weak bladder so we took him to the docs. They referred him to hospital for an mri. This was the beginning of December. We had a call from the hospital saying he needed to have tests done on his prostate but didn't say that they found anything.
He took ill on the 8th so i ran him to hospital and got told he had prostate cancer which had started to spread on the 9th.
Its been a nightmare for him and god knows how ive coped this week putting on a brave face with lack of sleep, looking after my mum who's in a wheelchair and now my dad.
Im comforting him and keeping his spirits up but at the moment its all a whirlwind of information thats not sinking in. I know its selfish of me to be like this because its nothing compared to what he's going through
Hi Neil,
Welcome to the group… and I’m so sorry that you find yourself here but as you say yes it’s been a real shock for you all but you are being so supportive to your parents and they are lucky to have you!
You are not being selfish. You are going through this too and I hope as well as being informative you might find the group a safe place to talk about what to expect next and to talk a bit about your concerns. Reading through others posts is a quick way to find out more about Prostate Cancer, treatments and how it affects family and carers.
Talk soon,
Louli
Hi
On here we do our best to give advice and help, your in a bit of a dilemma with what’s going on, let’s see if we can assist. First have you been in touch with McMillan nurses ? Their really good at explaining things and have a good listening ear, they can pay you a visit. Or if Theres a Maggies centre near you, they can provide some information and comforting words.
Now do you know if your dads had a biopsy? With your mum wheelchair bound, you could do with going to the hospital with your dad on his next visit, write down as many questions as you can, on this site there is a place to go that tells you what to ask.
I would like to say things will get easier, but at the start it’s a bit up in the air and you have to be patient, treatment and medication will be forthcoming, once tests are done, that’s when they will be able to give the right medication, which will start with hormone treatment.
There are a lot of ladies who give information and have had assorted experiences, hopefully they will see your post and reply. I personally know what it’s like having your world thrown upside down, it’s a real stressful thing, you may need to chat with your doctor about this.
Please keep positive PC is curable if not very treatable as it is for me I’m incurable but see the pain many many times of what family go through.
Stay safe
Joe
Hi Neilo and welcome, when we are told of this horrible diesel we all go through the same feelings, form a personal point of view I think it is worse for our loved ones than it is for us patients, not only do you have to go with us on our journey but you also have to look after us.
No way are you selfish, you sound extremely caring to me.
All the best Ulls
Hi. Thanks for the words and info. He had an mri before christmas and was due a biopsy on tuesday but when he went into hospital last weekend they looked at his records, ran tests ect and started him on treatment. I got a call from the hospital on friday telling me that his biopsy is cancelled and no longer needed as they know everything from what was done while he was in and they wont learn anything more.
He's on hormone therapy to reduce the size of the prostate and will be having an operation to remove some of it and then he hopefully will get the catheter removed. Im taking him in tomorrow for his first injection which is every 3 months. The district nurse has been to visit and has given us some numbers and set up deliveries for catheter bags.
He's going to see a consultant i THINK tomorrow after the jab but I'll have to check. He's coping well and is more worried about me lol.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
