Decapeptyl and atrial arrhythmia

Hello, I have been reading the posts on this group and have found them very helpful.  My husband has been diagnosed with prostate cancer Gleeson 4 + 4 no lymph involvement.  He has had a bone scan and now waiting for a follow up CT scan on his chest.  His treatment plan is 1month Bicalutamide followed by 3monthly injections of Decapeptyl.  RT after 3 to 6 months. First injection on 16th December.  No hot flushes, not too tired.

My husband is a fit 74 year old but has occasionally had atrial fibrillation.  About 2 weeks after the injection this is happening all the time, and he is extremely breathless, especially when lying down.  We still walk every day, but he says he is feeling like a 90 year old.

Has anyone else had this problem with Decapeptyl?

  • Hi and a very warm welcome to the online community

I'm sorry to read about your husband's reaction to decapeptyl. This must be very worrying for you both.

I don't have any experience with this but noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. Responding to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list where hopefully it'll be seen by some who has the experience you need.

I did a search in the group for previous posts which mention this drug and found these. You could have a look them and see if any of the posters have experienced anything similar to your husband.

I see that you also posted your question in the ask a nurse section of the online community and, if you haven't seen the reply, clicking here will take you straight there.

  • Thanks for that Latchbrook.  My husband has seen his GP who has referred him for tests.  He did not think it could be anything to do with the Decapeptyl, even though it is mentioned on the PIL as a possible side effect.  Over the last week he has suffered a couple of memory lapses which have frightened us both.  In just 4 months life has changed so much, we are very fearful about the future.

  • Hi

I'm glad to hear that your husband's GP is trying to get to the bottom of these symptoms. Has your husband spoken to his consultant yet as per the Macmillan nurse's suggestion in her reply to you?

It is horrible how much your life does change after a cancer diagnosis. I don't think you ever go back to normal even after treatment has finished as it's always at the back of your mind.

I hope you don't mind me suggesting that you might benefit from also joining the carers only group as this will give you the chance to discuss your worries and emotions with others who are supporting someone with cancer. If this is something that you'd like to do just click on the link I've created and you can then join and post in the same way as you did here or join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

Wishing you and your husband all the best
