Hi All

I don’t know where to start really. I’ve just been diagnosed with Prostate Cancer. Score of 3+4. I have a PSA score of 0.8 So was not expecting this. I’m only 46. I thought my wee issues were something else completely. I’m distraught. My consultant thinks we have got it early and it’s probably contained, but I can’t help thinking of all the bad things that can happen. My dad passed away with this and he was a lot older.

. I’ve had a week to think about it and am seeing him again tomorrow. He has given me info to read and 2 options of prostate removal surgery or Brachio therapy. The thought of catheters, incontinace and erectile issues is so scary. But the thought of the radiation is scary too and it’s long term effects. Has anybody here had to make the choice? Thank you for reading this and any advice. I’m so frightened. I don’t like pain at all but know I need to make a choice.

I’ve just had a successful Proton Therapy treatment (20 pain free treatments) at 56…. Thought I was young to get this ***** cancer. Maybe you have another option?

  • Hi

Your stats don't seem particularly high especially with a PSA of only .8 I assume that's correct.

If small and contained have u been offered active surveillance?

Yes my PSA is that low.  I think that active surveillance would just be prolonging the inevitable wouldn’t it?

  • Well I was on AS for 4 years, it was ok,

But yes, know what u mean although with such a low PSA you could last for years before treatment is needed.

You r only 46 so need to consider side effects that can result especially from surgery. Do u only have 1 PSA figure?

  • HI,

Its worth asking the oncologist/consultant  about the histology, because within the  3+4 group , the aggressiveness or grade of the cancer can be further determined by the type of cells that make up the '4' group. If you have either ductal or cribiform type that could make difference to the aggressiveness of the overall cancer. I would have thought active surveillance was an option open to you if the cancer is small ,  contained with a low PSA, and as long as you done have the type of cancer cells above then apparently the 10 year survival curve or life expectancy is simialr or same as someone with gleason score 3+3. Definitely need to speak to your consultant and if they think you have time, then take time to consider all your options.

  • Rocker123, sorry to hear of your diagnosis, but it does indeed sound as though your cancer has been caught early and, as such, is very treatable.

I won’t bore you with the details but do suggest you have a read of my profile as it details my journey from a very similar diagnosis. Surgery was a no-brainer for me, and I have found the side effects negligible.

Happy to answer any questions you have. And please, stay positive.

  • Hi HH

I have just read your profile and must say it has helped me.

I had a diagnosis last week which is similar to yours. Gleeson score 8, PSA 3.5, Staging T2cN0.

Consultant has suggested removal due to age (58). Bone scan next and discussions in January following results.

    Many thanks

Thank you so much for your reply.  I basically tried my best over the xmas period to put things to the back of my mind. Hence having gone quiet for a bit. My consultant said pretty much the same as yours did, in that surgery was the go to option for someone my age.  Because of lack of data and what my situation would be in the future if I had Brachytherapy.  He said that door would remain open if I changed my mind.  I have decided though and will be going for surgery.  I'm now waiting to see when that will be.

Thanks for your reply. I'm not sure of the type of cells I have, but my last discussion with my consultant, helped me in that i have now decided on surgery.  I just want to get rid of this as soon as possible.  Now just waiting on when that will be.

Yes only the 1 psa figure.  Over the Xmas period I decided that i would opt for the surgery.  I will keep my fingers crossed that the side effects won't be forever.  My consultant said that due to my age and slim build I will have a better chance of getting over them.  Thanks for your reply.
