Hello everyone. I ve just been diagnosed with prostate cancer 3 + 4 says the doctor. What do you suggest would be the best treatment?

Thanks.

  • Hi . There are so many factors, what was your Gleason, is it contained,  how old are you?

if contained then deemed cureable by either radiotherapy or surgery:-

    • surgery impact is immediate after treatment and gradually improving.  6 weeks post surgery psa should be undetectable therefore giving a level of comfort that all’s been removed. I was advised as a younger man that surgery was best due to longer term impact of radiotherapy
    • radiotherapy impact comes on slower but similar.  Psa drops to a nadir which is the baseline to identify whether further treatment required.
    • brachiotherapy is also an option again type of radiotherapy

Hifu can also be feesible, although can cause complications and difficulties in future treatment especially surgery

All treatment have their impact so what’s right for one is not right for all. You’ll have to live with the consequences so look on Macmillan, nhs and prostrate cancer get a list of questions for your MDT.

  • Hi Adom,

I was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer on the 27th May this year.  My Gleason score was 3+4, T2 intermediate risk.

I was unsuitable for surgery so I opted for Hormones and Radiation.

You get used to the Hormones.  I had 20 sessions of VMAT Radiation treatment.

Finished those on 2nd November.  No regrets for this option.

I'm in limbo now, waiting to hear if the Radiation worked.

    Good luck with your treatment.

  • Hi Adom.

If you take a look at my profile you’ll see my numbers were similar, albeit I am a few years younger. Surgery was deemed the best option for me, and I followed that advice. I have absolutely no regrets.

    Best of luck.

  • Hi   same for me. I was 50.  I had recurrent psa post surgery which showed unfortunately it had spread. I think radiotherapy wouldn't have identified the spread until nadir had raised
